From Bleacher Report, by NEPD's James Christensen:

1. S Jimmie Ward, Northern Illinois
2. G Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA [presumes Mallett + Pats' 7th trade for 33]
2. TE Troy Niklas, Notre Dame
3. QB Zach Mettenberger, LSU
4. LB Christian Kirksey, Iowa
6. TE Colt Lyerla, ex-Oregon
6. CB Ricardo Allen, Purdue

Edited to add: A disclaimer that I missed: "For the purposes of this exercise, I assume the Patriots have signed Talib, let Edelman and Ryan Wendell walk and failed to sign any game-changing free agents."

Jimmie Ward in the first?

A big fat win!

yes and it's a huge reach at 29. Trade up some in the 2nd for him.

We'll see how he runs today but he's certainly first round worthy. Like I said, best safety in the draft as far as Iz'm concerned. Fair enough if you don't agree.

LOVE the combo of Xavier and Niklas in the 2nd

Wish the draft would have addressed the defensive line. Niklas in the 3rd I really like. I always thought Ward was a 2nd rounder and would all for taking him in the 2nd, he must be really moving up the draft boards.

With Shazier running in the 4.4 range today (low 4.4 I believe), take him with 29. I don't think Mallet will be traded, but figure out a way to keep 29 and get an extra 2nd rounder in the top half.

1. Shazier
2. Su'a-Filo
2. Niklas
3. DaQuan Jones
4. Exum
6. Trey Burton
6. Developmental QB (Qb that falls)
7. Unknown Rutgers player
7. BPA

Yeah, I called it a "meh" largely because of the lack of DL. Switch Zack Mettenberger in the 3rd to a DT (Caraun Reid or Justin Ellis, for example) and I'm ok with it:

1. S Jimmie Ward, Northern Illinois. Not my personal choice and a bit of a reach, but not a huge one. He would certainly upgrade the SS position.
2. G Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA [presumes Mallett + Pats' 7th trade for 33]. Reasonable pick. I'm not 100% sold on him, but it addresses a need.
2. TE Troy Niklas, Notre Dame. Reasonable pick.
3. QB Zach Mettenberger, LSU. Again, I'd switch this to a DT.
4. LB Christian Kirksey, Iowa. Again, I have other preferences, but a solid pick.
6. TE Colt Lyerla, ex-Oregon. Certainly has the skill set, below the neck.
6. CB Ricardo Allen, Purdue. Once again, not my pick, but not unreasonable.

Make it Dominique Easley instead of Su'a-Filo and then a lineman in the 3rd, and I think it's pretty darn good.

Zero chance the take Lyerla.

I voted Fail. I want the next Rodney Harrison, not the next lil' Jimmy Sanders.

Meh.

1. S Jimmie Ward, Northern Illinois - A reach. Better off moving down 10 spots and I think Bucannon is about as good anyway. Good pick but not great value

2. G Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA [presumes Mallett + Pats' 7th trade for 33] - Good player but I think we should use this pick on a skill position on D. Get a guard later.

2. TE Troy Niklas, Notre Dame - Sure if it is a late second. Good pick

3. QB Zach Mettenberger, LSU - No. No QBs this high. If Brady goes down we are screwed anyway and this is not a replacement IMO. Use it on an asset that can help

4. LB Christian Kirksey, Iowa - Meh... This be a good time to get a OL or WR for value. OR use it on a big time high ceiling athlete like Tipp - LB if you go LB here.

6. TE Colt Lyerla, ex-Oregon - Sure. 6th round. Take a shot I have been pushing for this.

This continuing propensity to imagine that we could garner #33 for Mallett amuses me.

I'm still trying to convince myself we could get a 3rd for'm.

Agreed. It shouldn't be used in mocks until it actually happens.
