I wouldn't mind us taking a look for a low price.

He has good hands.

Article : Jason Avant Released

I'd be okay with it as a depth signing to compete with someone like Thompkins for a roster spot. He doesn't really fill a hole at WR though.

This is a belichick guy. Does his job and shuts his mouth. Won't cost a lot too. Sign him!

He's slow and his size is nothing remarkable but has exceptional hands and runs good routes. I think he's a better player than Thompkins will ever be, but even at the veteran minimum Thompkins is cheaper.

Pretty much this.

One of Cotchery/Avant should do as a dependable WR3/WR4.

If you want quality you need to pay for it, Thomkins may be less expensive but he can't catch the damned ball. I'm all for bringing Avant into camp and letting him compete for a roster spot.

I have zero interest in Avant. He reminds me of last season’s signing Michael Jenkins, a mediocre receiver who was overpaid for most of his career.

Not to mention it took him 76 targets to get 38 receptions, and his yards per catch average was 11.8.

How good/accurate were the passes thrown to him?

I am not a fan of Thompkins and do not expect him to make the 2014 roster but Avant is not an upgrade.

Thompkins – 70 targets, 32 receptions, 466 yards, 4 touchdowns.
Avant – 76 targets, 38 receptions, 447 yards, 2 touchdowns.

Nick Foles had a 64% completion percentage and was the #1 QB in the NFL for passer rating at 119.2.

That doesn't tell me about the specific passes thrown to Avant.

Except, nick foles didn't start the year and philly's 1st half of the season was awful. Also, having followed avant for a few years now since I live in philly and he's a good locker room presence.

I do not think Avant who had 11.8 yards per catch average was seeing high difficulty targets. I also do not think that every other receiver was thrown to more accurately on the Eagles than Avant. I do not see Avant adding anything to this team, he has 4 touchdowns in the past 4 seasons, and his long receptions is 33 yards in his career, so he is not a red zone threat or a deep threat. He is a #4 receiver.

Foles replaced Vick in week 5, in the first 4 games Avant was targeted 22 times for 12 receptions; in the games with Foles as the QB, he was targeted 53 times for 26 receptions.

I am not disputing he is a good locker room presence, and a productive player, but he is not going to add any value to this current team in my opinion. We need outside receivers who can stretch the field, we have more than enough possession receivers as it is.

We're talking 90 men squad now.

When did Avant become a good WR? Even at his peak, he was a decent #3 WR. Now he is going to be 31 in a month.

With the glut of decent wide receivers in free agency and in the draft, I hope the Pats get someone better at WR than Avant.

Avant is mediocre WR I'll take a Day 2 WR over him. Thompkins post slightly better numbers than him as a Rookie, not a ringing endorsement if you ask me.

I agree with an outside receiver, but stretching the field is overrated. They need someone to stop opposing teams from flooding the middle of the field.
