Bryant's plus-6.1 rating against the run is sixth amongst all defensive ends in the NFL, even though Bryant has played roughly half the number of snaps of those players ahead of him. On a per-snap basis, they have Bryant as the best run-stuffing DE in the league.

Bryant would be a strong addition if the money were right. He got nice coin from his extension, so he might not be looking to break the bank.


Also, since he's a new release, he could be signed at any time. And, if the cap is as high as recent projections, this wouldn't kill the idea of bringing back the players so many here want to keep (Talib/Edelman/Blount).

I remember him saying he stayed in Seattle because it's where he met his wife and where her family lived. Hopefully she's more open to moving across the country this time.

I would be so freaking pumped if they signed Bryant; he is the perfect Patriots defender. He has been the one that got away since the 2012 offseason in my mind.

Bryant is almost solely a run-stuffing 5-technique LE, and the Pats would have to undergo another base defense scheme change to fit him in. He could play LE in the 4-3 Under from 2011 or the 3-4 from many years before that, but that run-stuffing LE position doesn't exist in the more prototypical 4-3 defense they've used the past two seasons.

Unless Chandler Jones is playing 3-4 RE (which he was not adequately good at in the few attempts last season), then a scheme change involves taking one of the ~250-270 pound defenders off the field in favor of a ~300-315 pound one, which is inevitably doing to make the defense as a whole slower. I don't think I'd be in favor of that.

you mean that lights out defense that let the likes of Moreno rip off 37 carries for 224 yards?

Bryant is an All Pro d lineman. He can play DT. Experience, size, strength...add him to the roster...figure out the D alignments later on

If we sign Bryant, and keep Wilfork we would have a lot of bodies. I cannot part with Chris Jones or Siliga and I have high hopes for Armstead. So it is more of a numbers game.

On no planet are Chris Jones and Siliga in Tommy Kelly's league. If the window's closing, a healthy Kelly for this year and next helps our chances more than either of those guys. Kelly is a physical monster - you watch him in practice and he just plays bigger than anyone around him, except maybe Vince.

He's also a guy, like VW, who plays almost every game almost every year. If we could pick up Bryant, or Houston...we're in really good shape.

It is my own OPINION that Wilfork , if not done, is finished as a starter for the Patriots. I cannot see how anyone can spin an achilles rupture on a 350 + athlete as a likely full recovery.

I really doubt Wilfork will be able to come back at a meaningful level in 2014. It will be some time before the team is able to evaluate him.

If the Pats cut Wilfork and sign Bryant, then Bryant could rotate with Sealver Siliga and 4-3 NT, and could also play 3-tech when you want a "jumbo" DT and 3-4 DE or 4-3 LDE in an "under" scheme. I think there would be plenty of ways to use him effectively.

Bryant, Kelly, Sealiga, Jones and Armstead would be a solid DT group. If a penetrating 3-tech like Aaron Donald or Dominique Easley can be added via the draft, even stronger.

Plus, with the difference saved between Wilfork and Bryant, the Pats could go after Carlos Dunlap or Michael Johnson, one of whom should be on the market.

Which would you rather have? A hobbled Wilfork back, or Bryant plus Dunlap/Johnson in a rotation with Jones and Ninkovich?

I personally don't see it happening (according to overthecap.com it doesn't free up that much cap space), but it's possible that the Bengals will have to choice between keeping Carlos Dunlap and keeping Michael Johnson. They can't really afford to pay both, and one of the two should be on the market. Of course, with Mike Zimmer in Minnesota and Jay Gruden in Washington there might be some competition for their services, but that is another matter.

If the Pats cut Wilfork, they save 7.5...Bryant was getting 7 a year. Not going to save enough there to also add Dunlap or Johnson. We could still do it - just not with ONLY the Wilfork money.

I've believed for years (Seattle reinforced it this year) that you need to have a bunch of studs on the DL and rotate them liberally. Go Go Go! San Fran and Seattle have great defensive backfields...in no small part because opposing QBs rarely get 3 seconds. That's everything in today's NFL.

I'd like to see the Pats load up the DL with proven vets - Pat Sims (should be cheap), Lamar Houston, Red Bryant, Armstead, Kelly, Jones, Siliga, Nink...if Wilfork can still play, subtract one of the first three, maybe.
