The first thing that was glaring to me (and honestly surprised me a little) was the disconnect that showed with Peyton and his teammates.

Peyton Manning

• Wes pumping the team up, he just stands there still. Says nothing.
  
• Champ trying to pump him up pre-game and he basically said nothing.
  
• Immediately blaming his center as they jog off the field after the first play.
  
• Constant excuses about the line. Horrible body language (which we expect).
  
• I didn't see any pump ups or leadership. I respect manning immensely as a person, have always thought he was overrated as a player.

Russell Wilson

• Amazing leadership and poise. This kid is going to be incredible.
• He reminds me of a mix of Brady and Brees with more mobility. I don't see him being better than either, but I love his upside and root for him.

Legion of Boom

• This is a legitimate family between that defense. That's scary af for the rest of the league. They trust each other and they just fit amazingly well together.

Why do people respect Peyton as a person? None of us here know much about him. We don't know much about Brady either. Sure, both seem like nice guys, but we don't know their past and personal lives. Peyton had a bad incident in which he planted his anus and scrotum on a female trainer in college. She sued. Maybe that was a really bad moment, way out of character. Maybe a lot of people had bad moments like that. Years later, though, he slandered that woman in a book he wrote by saying she was coarse and had a potty mouth. That doesn't show great character, to me.

My dad works for the nfl. Has never said anything negative about him.

I have seen him numerous times after games and he was always very respectful and polite to everyone I saw him talk to (stadium personnel at away stadiums, kids, the like).

Peyton Manning has never been a "rah-rah" type of guy from what I understand and have seen. I don't know why people are surprised or are knocking the guy? That's who he is and that's who he's always been. He's one of the best quarterbacks of all time, he's not good as Brady and never will be as good as Brady. But to say he's "overrated" as a player is quite simply moronic and erases all the credibility you have.

Now get over it and move on. We have a season to get ready for, we'll meet him again next year at some point and we'll lay the wood to him.

PM may not have been up enough for the game, he may have not taken responsibility sufficiently for certain plays, you/we may not like him, however, I have it first hand from a long time reporter at ESPN that PM is a very genuinely nice guy (no, not one of the jackasses at ESPN -- this is one of their female reporters).

He may have royally effed up that day, in a way I never have. But I'm going to say he deserves a one-off for that. But what shows really bad character is to slander her years later in his book. That shows he had no remorse and instead thought it was something she deserved. I bet the female ESPN reporter is unaware of what he did.

None of us are angels either. I hope Peyton's family life and kids are ok. But if someone's treated like that, it's your right to cheer for his opponent on the football field.

He learned everything from Archie, probably even the pouting, or Manning Face, that we've seen so often over the years.

What brought out the lawsuit from the young lady wasn't the tea-bagging itself, but to see Peyton and his dear old dad yukking it up about her, in a book of all places.

I remember hearing Archie whining to millions of people, on CBS radio the morning of the SB in 2007, about how Fran Tarkenton didn't belong in the HOF.

And now we hear that, in spite of the hundreds of millions that the family has made, young Eli might be involved in a scam over jerseys he sells.

That doesn't sound like class to me, but I understand why a fawning public doesn't want to hear about it. They prefer the phony Manning image.

Thread seems to have gone off the rails a bit to a discussion of Manning's character rather than his leadership (which I think was the OP point).

To me, these are pretty damning observations above — not about character, but about leadership.. I also felt like, as much as people thought Manning was so classy in his calm post-game press conferences, I want to see some competitive fire there, some sense of the pain. Not in a staged way or maudlin way — but something that didn't convey so much detachment from what just happened.
