Pats working out Merriweather tomorrow

I assume BB will do it. He was in FLA as of yesterday and usually works out the Miami players himself.

Didn't think he played for Miami for more than two years, while his previous experience was in JUCO. I would tend to favor greater experience and more size, but have to leave that judgment up to BB and the front office.

IMO, I would examine John Weddling of Wyoming. Good size, good speed. And he is from Wyoming! If South Dakota can produce a kicker like Adam Vinatieri, than Wyoming should be able to produce a pretty decent safety once in a while.

Merriweather has especially thin legs, but make no mistake he can and will bring the lumber. His work is coverage is woeful, but play him near the line and he will thump somebody.

I was looking at Lindy's annual draft magazine at lunch and they compared him to Bob Sanders. Sanders was the difference maker for the Colts. If Merriweather has the chance to be anything close to Sanders he would be a great pickup.

No I don't think so. Sanders plays one game and then spends three games recovering, beforoe he can play one game again.

I don't want undersized safeties like Merriweather or Griiffin either. Draft a CB, or wait until the third round to take a Safety with size, like Piscitelli, Wendling, Rouse or Weddle.

200 lbs is not small for a safety. It's not huge, but it's definitely average size. IMO, the days of the 220 lbs safeties are pretty much done. This is a passing league more than ever. I want a safety that can be a big play threat against opposing offenses. That's the one thing we've really missed in our safeties the past 2 years. Sanders is a solid young player, but he's not a difference maker back there. I want a guy who is a solid and willing tackler in the run game, but is feared by opposing QB's. Any of Merriweather, Nelson, Landry, or Griffin would make me really smile.

The more I read of Merriweather being more of a run guy the more I lose interest. A banger who can aslo really cover, I'm cool with. A mostly run guy who's got a good chance to not last due to his size - whose skill set can also be drafted later - no thanks.

That's what I thought Merriweather was but opinion seems to be changing on his pass coverage.

I wish Aaron Rouse was as good a football player as he is an athlete. 215 pounds who can run . . . that's what I want . . . unfortunately when I read about Rouse I feel like there's too much Tebucky Jones there.

FWIW, I thought I'd look up Bob Sanders' combine numbers. Here they are side-by-side with Meriweather's:

I don't doubt you at all, Ochmed, but everything I read says Merriweather is well above average in coverage for a Safety . . . is Ochmed's opinion shared here ?

No, your cool. He's a good football player. I didn't disparage his coverage ability. I think he's a viscious Son of a ***** and I question his character. There's a difference between being a passionate football player and being a thug who tries to break the leg of his opponent.

1 incident he took blame. hes passionate..he was before the incident and still is. leave it at that.

Landry is far and away the best safety in the draft, he's out of our range unless we trade up (which I wouldn't mind).

Griffin is by far the second best safety in the draft, he has good size with room to bulk up, and exceptional coverage skills, he's also a good hitter who can come and help against the run (I don't know if he'll do much). Not to mention Griffin comes from a big time program, with a knack for producing great defensive backs

Nelson has great physical tools, and has good awareness, but he also has intelligence issues and it remains to be seen if he can handle NFL playbooks.

Meriweather is similar to Nelson, except instead of intelligence issues he has character issues. He isn't a workout warrior, but just look at the tape, he plays faster than he times.
