"On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon. - Ron Borges, MSNBC after 2001 Draft."

If I ever made an a-hole assessment like that, and then saw how things actually turned out, I would quit my sportswriting job out of sheer embarrassment.

That's not a joke.

Don't worry about the dead horse, that quote is like sex . . . you can never get enough of it.

We love you, Ronny

word is that Borges copied that from Matt Millen's draft report...

This never gets old.

You know, I would be fascinated if anyone has any hints as to why Borges has had such a vendetta against the Patriots/Belichick. Anyone have any media references or rumors they have heard ?

------

But it did ocur to me the other day, that for a guy with as big an ego as Borges, just this well publicized early gaff of his might have stuck in his craw more than we realize. This could very well be one of the significant things that make him so anti-Patriot.

It has been often mentioned here and other places also that Borges had an inside track with Bledsoe and probably the jetisoning of Bledsoe may be another item high on his list.

Boy, that quote is still just as good the 250 millionth time as it was the first.

In some cultures (mostly Asian) an embarrassment of these proportions is enough reason for suicide.

The one rumor (Full Disclosure: I have NOTHING to back this up) that I've always heard is that Borges and Mannix at the Herald were buddies with Parcells who gave them full access to the inner sanctum. When the whole Parcells/Jets/Belichick debacle went down, from that day forward, Borges in particular, just despised Belichick.

BB was despised by the Cleveland media and Borges decided that he would be the one to continue the animosity once BB arrived in NE. Basically, Borges made a bet that BB would implode in NE and thus positioned his rants in order to take first credit if BB's demise ever occurred. Same tactic he has used with his draft venom. History has shown how Wrong Borges has been.

"pass-happy SEC "

I live in SEC country and I would not call it pass happy except for Florida

If he followed his usual patterns back then did he have a column in the Globe the following day praising all the Pat's draft picks?!?!

Really, I don't blame Borges for voicing his opinion at the time. We all do. The sad part of this is that to this day, Borges believes that he was right and Belichick was wrong, and that Belichick happened to get lucky.

I think the funniest thing about this quote is that I heard him on a radio show a couple years back and a caller asked if he will admit he was wrong on that quote. He said no because he was "right at the time" he wrote this. Huh?!?

So eventhough Seymour is an elite player and three of the four players he thought we should have gotten are out of football and the other just got cut from the team that drafted him, he was right at the time. Considering Matt Light took two games to start for the Pats, I guess he was right about him for a good three or four months.

well, his arrogance has finally caught up to him and bit him in his arse. plagiaristic bastard !!

Thanks for bringing this back. Everybody has been wrong about players they liked. I'm still waiting for Adrian Klemm to get healthy, becasue when he does, I AM SURE, he'll beat out Matt Light so he can move to LG and get to the Pro Bowl. ;)

But this statement by Borges is SOOOOO wrong on SOOOOO many levels that it should be elevated into the pantheon of WRONGNESS. Thanks again

BTW it IS frightening how far Borges' arrogance went. before this thread, I never knew he responded to a question about this remark with "I was right then". Man that is pure chutzpah. In fact that is the DEFINITION of chutzpah :D

He can only be held responsible for things he authored.

Love it!

Can someone post a date (Boston Globe...)

There's like three people on this board with this quote as their sig.

Not like I'm complaining, mind you. I could read that 1000 times, and it stills brings a smile to my face.

Isn't that Sepuku? Just curious. But GREAT quote none the less!!
