My take:

2.Safety
3.Cornerback
4.OLB

I'd have to agree with that.

SS - ILB - RB/FB

Take CB off the board. Samuel, Gay, Hobbs and Wilson are still young.

Rodney and Tedy need to be replaced in 2008. Might as well draft their replacements in April and groom them slowly while the old war horses can still play and be a mentor.

And, if Hartwell signs you can move ILB down below RB/FB. Griffin - Leonard would solve these two needs.

We still don't know if Samuel is going to be around past this year. His departure would leave a serious hole at CB, and if that were the case it would be best to have another younger player who can become a relatively seemless replacement.

Also, as this team has proved, you can never have too many DBs.

I agree with you too! Lets hope we draft a LB

The futures of Samuel, Wilson, and Gay are all up in the air past 2007.

I am sure DB's is going to draft.....question is how many:confused:

I'd rate it:

ILB1
ILB2
RB
OLB
CB

I think it's interesting that you rate RB that high because we could go into the season with the guys we have now and I would be ok with it, but of course adding another player would be nice too.

By the way what's the status of Patrick Pass?

I think it depends on how you define needs. There are, IMO, 3 levels of need.
1) Guys you need now to plug a liability
2) Bodies for depth. You are fine at the position, but need more players, although it isnt that critical which jags you get.
3) Guys that are vital now, but need to be developed, i.e. draft choice at a position where starters are good but aging.

ILb is the biggest need from a body standpoint. There is no doubt we need more ILBs. But, if Vrabel will be moving inside, and staying there, it isnt a need to be sure we win now. Jags can fill in the backup spots, and we have 2 young guys with potential, but have definitive need in the near future. Are Mays and Alexander future starters here? If not, we should be grooming someone else. If so, are they the jags of today?

S IMO fits all 3 areas. We MAY need a safety to contribute in 2007. Harrison has to be an inuury concern. Wilson as well. Hawkins, IMO, is either on his way out, or a last option. Sanders could step in but having someone to compete as the 3rd S would be a good idea. Bodies are needed to compete for s/ts and safeties have been our best s/ts performers for years. We also need safeties to develop as future starters.

----The difference, IMO, is that safeties come cheaper (in both the round you get them in the draft or what you pay in FA) than LBs, so if its a toss up, you go LB first, s next.

I dont see RB as a need. We have our 3. This is Maroney team as far as RB is concerned. Faulk is the 3rd down guy. Morris is 3 things. First a special teamer, second the backup to grab a few snaps a game, and 3rd the starter if Maroney is out, with Faulk staying in the 3rd down role.

I think we should add at least 1 OL in the draft, because BB will see a guy who is good value at the spot, and plug him into the OL program. Britt, Yates, Mruc are vulnerable to being replaced by a guy with more upside, so if he is on the board, BB will grab him, likely early day 2.

WR........I think we are done adding those guys.

QB. IMO, this is a need everyone is overlooking. Personally, I am not ready to rely on Matt Cassell to step in if Brady goes down. I would love to have a rookie #3 with the potential to challenge Cassell. I would like to have a guy with good college experience and as much potential as Cassell who can push him for the #2 spot, or replace him if Brady goes down and Cassell struggles.
Personally, if I were a GM, I would draft Troy Smith. forget all of the measurables, Ive seen this guy play, Ive seen his attitude, and he is a flat out winner. I'd love the Pats to draft him in the 3rd round.

Corner. Absolutely a need. I like Samuel and Hobbs. I'm so-so on Chad Scott, and if we are going to rely on Randall Gay, we are asking for trouble. I'm fine if Gay is the #3 if he is healthy, but not fine if we don't have a good option if he is hurt again. I think Chad Scott is closer to the end than the prime of his career. I think a corner somewhere by the 4th round would be a great idea. He would be able to earn the #3 spot if he is capable, and wouldnt necessarily have to be any more than the 5th. I'd like to use that 3rd on a corner along with Troy Smith.

If we are solely looking at the draft, I'd like 4 players on day 1, in no particular order: (expect no QB in round 1 of course)
LB
S
CB
QB

On day 2, I'd like an OL, a DL (no reason we cannot look for an upgrade at DT in the middle rounds). The rest of the picks can be used pretty mcuh anywhere, because there would be room at the end of the roster, ps, or special teams for anyone who falls into round 5-7 and turns out to be an NFL caliber rookie.

In order of preference, considering current projected roster and recent FA activity:

1) SS/FS
2) ILB
3) CB
4) RB
5) OLB
6) DE

I'm curious about 6) DE.
We have Seymour, Warren, Green, Wright, and Hill.
I know Hill has been a disappointment, but I don't think there is a team better 1-4 than we are.
I'd be much more concerned about #2 at NT, #2/#3 at QB.

Yup I'd say the needs would be

1. ILB - plug in next to Bruschi and develop long term
2. S - to develop behind Harrison
3. CB - to develop behind our starters or upgrade the Nickel
4. OL - developmental
5. RB - developmental

And then second day we can look at adding a backup QB, Tightend (we always draft one), backup DL, even another WR etc.

But the way the Pats have set themselves up this offseason they can either move up to get their top prospect or stay put, or even tradedown. So they can go in just about any direction with those two #1 picks. And they don't have to draft by need either. As you can see most of our picks this year will be counted on to be mostly developmental guys, so there's really no situation where the Pats will be "forced" to draft anybody. That's just great imo.

If the Pats don't draft an ILB in round 1, they can easily trade down into the 2nd round, get additional picks, then get a guy like Siler, Woodley, Harris, etc. in round 2. The most exciting aspect about this year's draft is that the Pats probably have the most latitude that they have had in years to go after exactly who they want to, and the players they think are best, without really having to depend on that guy to start from day 1. That has got to be scary for the rest of the league! :)

I agree about QB. I want an old pro as the third QB, not a rookie, buti'd draft a low rookie for the PS. My favorite is Brad Johnson but an old ex-starter would do as well.

As far as RB is concerned, there are franchise backs and there are Jags. Except for third down backs, a special category, there is nothing else. We have a franchise back and a great 3rd down back, and a couple, three jags.

I'd like to see Eugene Wilson play his old college position and bring in someone more cabale then Hawkins. That leaves DB at an OK status for 07 but a huge question mark afterwards. The dominos fall when the staff figures out if Hobbs will ever develop into a #1 corner and if not, assuming we don't pay Asante $80M next year, get someone in the draft that can groom to the future opening.

Sanders was ok last year, wasn't he?

Rd 1 S, ILB

afterwards:
Whoever BB/SP want is ok with me.

Agree with your assessment of the DL 1-4. My concern is that the DL seemed to lack depth in the 2nd half of the AFC Championship. Wilfork, Warren, and Seymour needed to be spelled. Wright and Green were doing good work, but they seemed to tire as well. It's obvious that either Hill or LeKevin Smith need to step up and some competition in TC wouldn't hurt. My guess is that this TC is Hill's last roundup. Maybe a backup NT is needed, but a good player at that position is hard to find later in the draft.

My take:

1.ILB
2.Safety

I agree, but I'm still very concerned about our safety position, and CB. Harrison cant stay healthy, and i still feel we need someone on the other side of Samuel. I jump out of my seat everytime a ball is thrown Hobbs way. I would feel better to have a healthy Randall Gay playing, instead of hobbs.

No way is Gay better than Hobbs.

I would like a vet ilb and a back up cb and let the draft take care of itself

ILB
Saftey
CB
and another D Line man would not hurt
