Thought this was an interesting slant on the talent in round one. Gil Brandt has the prospects broken down in tiers; 1-10, 11-20, 21 and up. I'll just list the names, click the link to see the Combine numbers and notes he has for each player:

If it all shakes out this way, notice that Revis's tier is contingent upon his workout. Nelson, Willis, Staley, may be within our range. And from tier 2, which player would you want to slide to #24?

1. Meacham
2. Carriker

He has Patrick Willis pretty low.

I'd like Houston, Bowe, Meachem and Carriker from the second tier.

I'll go w/ dryheats guys + Houston. No C Johnson, nor Sydney Rice in the top 39? Just a surprise omission base on other "top-..."

Easy! Posluzny. The Pats have room to add three draftees at LB. Davis, Mays, Alexander and Izzo are all easily replaced by good draftees. There are not many other places that the Pats draft that they wouldn't end up cutting the guy or somebody else that can play, and in effect stock another franchise,as much as helping themselves.

They can use a WR and a RB (Lorenzo Booker). Maybe a draft pick on the Stanford QB in the 4th and Sepulveda P, in the 6th. I'd like to get Zak DeOssie too. unlike y'all there is not a real need in the defensive backfield, IMO

As of now... 9:48 3/3/07 I am thinking that the Pats take one CB (Ross, Hall, Houston and then BPA. A good young CB is key for 2008 assuming Samuel is gone.

If the board shakes out like this it would be hard to pass on Willis and Nelson if they are available.

A wild card for me is Staley, if he has starting LT ability and can be signed cheap for 5 years then he may represent the best long-term value.

Players are listed in alphabetical order - CJ is #5. Rice obviously missed the bus.

My Bad. I was actually thinking about Charles Johnson, DE from Georgia, who always sems to be ranked toward the end of top-25 lists. Calvin Johnson, I had seen. Teach me to abbreviate...

Posluszny has to have the widest draft range of any player this year. Some people have him top 20 others second day. I'm sure the truth is some place in the middle like late second but it will be interesting.

Carriker is certainly our type of player but short of a trade it'll be hard to get him on the field.

I think we are trading out of one of the firsts. As I look at tier two and three I really don't see much of a difference at all and if you were to list tier four it'll look the same too. Much more vaule in the second round.

I still want to rebuild the secondary, I would love Nelson at 24 or settle for Griffin at 28. Ross or Revis I'd be fine with the other pick.

Slipping from Group Two ? Probably Houston, he speed/strength combo is very imtriguing.

After this I would have loved to trade up from round two for David Harris but if we lose our #2 that would be difficult.

It 'should' be hard to get Carriker on the field his rookie season. Wright is an RFA next season, with the new 2nd round tender you can put guys like Welker and Wright who overachieve their UDFA status on the market and get another day one pick in return - good for them to go to a team that has more cash to offer, and good for the Pats. If Wright continues to improve, he might even be marketable with a first round tender, just look at speculation teams may make a bid for Blue. The more turnover on BB's terms the better.

I don't think we'd pass on Carriker if we get a db with the other pick. But, then I don't think he'll be available. We NEED a defensive back. Luckily there should be great value where we pick.

Brandt updated his list on 3/11.

I am pumped, at a minimum we are going to get 2 players from this list, it is also realistic that 1 of the players from Tier 2 falls to 24. The team is going to be stronger after the first round.

Players are listed by tier and then sorted alphabetically.
--------------------------------------------------------------
First tier -- 1 through 10
1. Gaines Adams, DL, Clemson: Gaines (6-4¾, 250) did not lift, but ran 4.64 in the 40, had a 35-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-11 long jump and clocked 4.36 in the short shuttle. He also worked out as a linebacker (3-4).
2. Jamaal Anderson, DL, Arkansas: Anderson (6-5 3/8, 288) was a medical exclusion and did not work out. He looks thin at this weight.
3. Alan Branch, DL, Michigan: Branch (6-5¾, 324) ran 5.07 in the 40, had a 27½-inch vertical jump, and 8-foot-11 long jump and did 33 reps. He did not run the shuttles.

Second tier -- 11 through 20
11. Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU: Bowe (6-2¼, 221) ran 4.51 in the 40, had a 33-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-5 long jump. He also had times of 4.35 in the short shuttle and 6.81 in the three cone.
12. Levi Brown, OL, Penn State: Brown (6-5½, 323) was clocked at 5.40 in the 40, had a 25½-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-1 long jump and did 31 lifts.

15. Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas: Houston (5-9 7/8, 185) ran 4.33 in the 40, had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-2 long jump, a 4.12 short shuttle and 27 lifts.
16. Marshawn Lynch, RB, California: Lynch (5-11 1/8, 215) is considered a very good receiver. He ran 4.46 in the 40, 4.55 in the short shuttle and 7.05 in the three-cone drill. He also had a 35½-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-5 long jump.
17. Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee: Meachem (6-2, 214) ran 4.38 in the 40, 4.31 in the short shuttle and 6.96 in the cone drill. He had a 37½-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-2 long jump.

23. Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State: Ginn (5-11¼, 178) did not work out at the Combine due to a lingering foot injury from the national championship game. He will work out at Ohio State on March 10.
24. Michael Griffin, DB, Texas: Griffin (5-11¾, 202) was timed at 4.45 in the 40. He also had a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot long jump, ran 4.10 in the short shuttle, 6.60 in the cone drill and had 16 lifts.

27. Reggie Nelson, DB, Florida: Nelson (5-11 3/8, 198) did not lift or run shuttles. He ran 4.48 in the 40 and had a 34½-inch vertical jump. Has 33¼-inch arms.

Wild Cards
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Southern Cal: Jarrett (6-4, 219), with a good time could rate in the 11-20 group.
Darrelle Revis, DB, Pittsburgh: Revis (5-11½, 205), with a good time could rate in the 21-35 group. He had 21 lifts.
Marcus Thomas, DL, Florida: Thomas (6-2¾, 314) did not work out, but had 26 lifts. He's a good player with off-field problems.
Eric Wright, DB, UNLV: Wright (5-10 5/8, 192) ran 4.36 and 4.37 in the 40, had a 36 ½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump, a 4.22 short shuttle and a 6.93 three-cone drill. He may be the best corner in the draft, but he has had off-field problems.

I think that Jarrett and Revis are in the top 20, so at least 2 must drop. We should get one of our defensive backs. It could Griffin as we have speculated for weeks.

The more I look at this draft, the less excited I get.

So we would only have to move up 4 palces to get Willis.

It is still very hard to imagine Willis getting by Carolina.

It's a good point on the 2nd round tender. Wright's playing time was mostly NT so his subbing for Vince to give him a blow is different because he was second on the depth charts. To draft and play Carriker he would have to hop over Green and Wright and we would have to carry an extra DL on game day. It also probably means the end of either the Hill or Smith eras.

Having 2 picks makes all the difference. Although not spectacular and largely based on potential I am very excited, 2 units should really be improved just in round 1.

Sometimes two doubles is as good or better than a home run.

Assumes no trade ups (I have left out players that look to be locks in the top 15)

All the players listed have above average starting potential, should be players in the league for a long time.

S - Nelson, Griffin and Merriweather
LB - Willis, Beason, Timmons would add some speed and youth
OT - Staley - has starting LT potential, Brown could be a longterm RT
G - Grubbs has above average potential
WR - Jarrett, Ginn, Bowe, Meachem all have #1 potential
CB - Houston, Revis, Ross - all #2 or higher potential
OLB- Moss, Spencer
DT - Harrell could be a great addition, play inside or outside
DE- Carriker - he can fall right?

Brandt updated his list on 3/11.

Marcus Thomas, DL, Florida: Thomas (6-2¾, 314) did not work out, but had 26 lifts. He's a good player with off-field problems.
