Pats only interest in WR in the class of 2002

Hi guys, Noticed after Deion Branch, David Givens left the Pats.

They had gotten last year:

Reche Caldwell,
Jabar Gaffney,

This year, they have gotten:

Donte Stallworth

What's so interesting about class of 2002 WR ?

It's definitely amusing. Stallworth was the #1 ranked WR by Pro Football Weekly that year. NFL Draft Scout had them ranked : Lelie, Javon Walker, Gaffney, Stallworth, Caldwell. Branch was 10th.

BTW - guess who else was in that draft ? Andre Davis who we had for a year too

Here's a thought: because most WRs from later drafts haven't hit free agency yet, and the ones from earlier drafts have either been signed long term, or washed out?

In the case of Caldwell and especially Gaffney, I think the major point of interest was that they were available. Simple as that.

I actually know the real reason for this.

The number 2002 is BB's favorite number. I know some of you may find that hard to believe but when growing up BB had 2002 pet worms in his worm farm and he loved them all equally. Not a single worm received more love from BB than another worm. And there were exactly 2002 of them. You may be thinking... "hey, now that's a hell of a lot of worms Mike!!" and to that i say:
not for BB, for BB anything is possible.

That year draft actually provided mediocre talent in WRs. As you point out, Lelie , Stallworth, Gaffney, Caldwell...etc...

Walker is the exception. So, the Pats actually had gotten one 1st round (Stallworth), two 2nd round (Caldwell, Gaffney) of that year draft. Wow...wait 'til the Pats get Lelie and they are sweeping all the top WRs of that draft

itd make sense if they all played out their rookie contracts and were signed after them....but that doesnt seem to be the case at all...but i think each has his own story...what year was welker?

im sure the fact that they are all entering their prime years has something to do with it as well...takes a couple years for WR to grasp the NFL offenses

Gaffney was definitely case of needing to fill a hole during the Gabriel situation. And Caldwell came to FA when the Pats were looking for a number two after the departure of Givens. As for Stallworth, if you look at the FA situation out there and recent history with WR draftees - Bethel, Chad - the PAts filled a need with pretty much the only guy who was available.

Welker was clearly a different situation.

Agree. They all come to the Pats for different year and reasons. So, it has nothing to do with their rookie contracts. For example, Stallworth via FA. Caldwell was cut by the Chargers. Houston cut Gaffney, I believe.

If the Pats try for draft 2003, they could have Andre Johnson and Anquin Boldin
