I think Whisenhunt is a pretty good coach. I can understand not taking the Detroit job, simply because the Fords are apparently crap owners, and I don't see how you can expect to win on a team where Stafford, Megatron and Suh are taking up most of your cap space. I think people are getting caught up in the big names at the top of the roster, and failing to realize that due to how much they're getting paid there's very little talent behind them. That's why they had to let Cliff Avril go for relative peanuts, and it's only going to get worse when Suh cashes in. And on top of that, I'm still not convinced that Stafford is a good quarterback. He was downright awful down the stretch this year, when Calvin Johnson was downgraded to merely 'really good' by his knee troubles.
Contrary to the public opinion, I think Tennessee could be a good job opportunity for Whisenhunt. They have some real talent in place at WR (Hunter and Wright), Delanie Walker is a good TE, their offensive line has some talent, their defense is really good, and they have a lot of cap space once they get rid of their RBs. Whisenhunt will need to groom a QB, but regardless of what happened in Arizona, that's what he's supposed to be good at. We now have data points suggesting that he can do it (Roethlisberger) and that he can't (Leinart, Kolb), while Skelton just wasn't an NFL-caliber QB. Now he'll get another shot at it, and if he can get a QB in this draft and have him performing capably by year 2, he's potentially looking at a playoff team. ****, they almost made the playoffs this year with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB.
It's by no means a slam dunk, he obviously has some challenges in front of him, but if that wasn't the case than Munchack wouldn't have been fired to begin with. If you're taking over a vacant job, there's always going to be question marks up and down the roster. I do know that I'd rather take over this situation than the Lions.
