Most everyone assumes that teams will not give up a 1st and a third for a franchised player.......
Don't be so sure....

There's are reason why CB's are franchised at such
a high-tender,in money,and in draft choices...
They are very,very,valuable.

As teams that have been reticent to get into the FA
bidding,(partly due to the brilliant "blitzkrieg" tactics of BB/SP),I believe "panic" mode,may set in for certain teams.

After all,The Pats aren't "locked-in",for a 1 and a three for Samuel......What about exchanging a 24 for a higher 1?......Plus a One next year?

There are many,many,possibilities here........Teams
who are unable to get their "choice" in the first round,belive me.......they will panic.
Detroit?Washington?Arizona?Giants?
All NFC teams,who we would deal with.

What's the value for the Patriots?
1.)A 2008 First Rounder?
2.)Landry,Nelson,Willis?
3.)Big savings on the cap.....use to lock up core players long-term.
4.)We're looking at the possibility that Asante may try to hold out,like Branch,either way he will be an
unhappy camper.
5.)Is Asante really indispensible to the Patriots?
I don't think he is...not with the possibility of Wilson at corner or getting the top CB in the draft.

Is this speculative?....Of course it is.....I'm simply saying that as we approach the Draft,then serious focus is going to be shown on Asante Samuel.

BB/SP won't initiate this,but I'm convinced some other team will.

why dont u let the front office take care of it? Samuel isnt going anywhere this year. Hes becoming an elite corner . u dont trade an elite player thats young. He can be replaced but it would take more than 2 years to get someone at his level through draft. drafting a player is risky especially when u want him to replace a great player. they are negotiating a long term contract..you dont wanna pay him? Why not? Hes top 5 at his position imo and is only going to get better..hes been underrated and many here said hes not starting material. Finding a great corner now a days is very hard. He didnt say anything negative about the tag so lets leave him alone.

if he gets traded its next year .. we wouldnt have franchised him if we wanted to just trade him. we franchised him..were willing to pay the $7 mill or w.e for the franchise and workout a long term deal. if nothing is worked out now..he'll finish out the year and move on if nothing is done next season. for now..hes a Patriot and no holdout is expected

I think Italia44 provokes some good ideas - trading Samuel would save the Pats a major cap hit, nearly $8mil is nothing to sneeze at. We could use that to lock up someone like Warren two years early. Or how about the three first round picks we'd have if It44's plan went through. Talk about injecting some youth! Yes, I'm guilty of the-grass-is-always-greener thinking here but losing Samuel would be eased by gaining a threesome of potential stars, that's for sure!

i read it but its stupid to even start this. we had a few threads suggesting trades like TeBucky . who says Samuel wants that contract? does that mean every good CB is going to get an 80 mill contract? Plus hes only really making 7.5 per year so Samuel could def be getting that anyways

I doubt this FO is comfortable with the concept of paying Asante $7.8M for one year. He's just not that good. No offense. But they may decide to depending on how players like Gay and Wilson actually project off this board. Or they may prefer to use him to help upgrade for the longer term. It's not beyond the realm of possibility he could even be traded for a player (mid level corner or veteran safety) and a pick or picks.

The ball is likely in Asante's court from here on out. If his contract demands aren't unreasonable they may yet get something worked out. If not I think he will eventually start making his displeasure known and they will then look to alternative arrangements that get him what he wants and us something pretty good in return.

IMO, the FO had to be comfortable with paying Samuel $7.8 million for one year. Once they made the tender offer, they could not control when Samuel signs it. Samuel could sign the offer tomorrow and the salary would be guaranteed.
