Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden will become the next coach of the Washington Redskins.

Looks like RG3 and RG2 have finally given their approval for a coach of their choice

Gruden was the sixth candidate known to have interviewed with the Redskins, following offensive coordinators Darrell Bevell of the Seattle Seahawks and Jim Caldwell of the Baltimore Ravens, defensive coordinators Sean McDermott of the Carolina Panthers and Perry Fewell of the New York Giants, and Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia.

The Redskins had planned to meet with Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin but he reportedly has been offered the coaching job at Penn State. The team also has sought interviews with offensive coordinators Ken Whisenhunt of the San Diego Chargers and Greg Roman of San Francisco 49ers, and defensive coordinators Mike Zimmer of the Bengals and Vic Fangio of the 49ers.

Gruden has been a candidate for the Titans, Vikings and Detroit Lions openings. Before his interview Wednesday, one person close to the situation said that Gruden seemed to prefer the Titans but the Redskins might make him a financial offer that would be difficult for him to refuse.​

A five-year deal is highly unusual for a first-time NFL head coach and was a key to getting the deal done. Gruden’s agent, Bob LaMonte, said Gruden’s ties to members of the organization and his desire to work with Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III also were major factors.

Gruden has ties to several members of the Redskins organization and was said Wednesday to have emerged as the team’s top choice to replace Shanahan. Gruden worked with Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen with the Buccaneers. Gruden was an assistant coach working for his brother and Allen was the team’s general manager. Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris and tight ends coach Sean McVay also worked with Gruden in Tampa. McVay and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett worked with him in the UFL.

“He had an existing relationship with Bruce (Allen),” LaMonte said in a telephone interview. “He had an existing relationship with Haslett. He had an existing relationship with McVay. That certainly played into it. He was intrigued by the talent of the quarterback.”​

Jay Gruden is a member of the Arena Football League Hall of Fame, elected in 1999 after a career as a successful player and coach in the indoor league. His previous head coaching stints have come in Arena Football with the Orlando Predators and in the UFL with the Tuskers, whom he led to the UFL championship game the year after Haslett left to join the Redskins.​

I wouldn't want to be the guy who has tell Daniel Snyder that he didn't hire the Gruden that won a Superbowl, but the Gruden who couldn't win a playoff game.

But seriously, this is a stunner. I mean, what has this guy done that makes him better than the dozens of other assistants looking for a HC'ing job. He had a very good OL, above average RB's, above average WR's, 2 excellent TE's, and an average QB with above average stats. Yet despite being AT HOME, he managed only 10 points against a 9 win warm weather team (and that 9th was a gift....one they almost didn't take), playing outdoors in the cold. It was a bad game plan compounded by a lack of adjustments. In other words, situation normal in Cinci.

Now who knows, Gruden may turn out to be an excellent HC. We have examples of player after player who come into the league with poor resumes and turn out to be stars. The same goes for coaches. By definition, EVERY coach who makes it to the coordinator level in the NFL, is one of the best coaches in the land as far as the technical part of the game goes (x's and o's). But being a HC is more about leadership, respect, vision, and most importantly RESULTS, than it is about x's and o's. I just haven't seen anything from Gruden-light that would reflect any of those key attributes.

But this is the Washington team, (I've decided I'm not going to us their nickname anymore), and who knows. Maybe Gruden was the only guy who said yes. Hard to believe that Jay Grudden is an NFL HC, and Ken Wisenhunt isn't.

Jay Gruden is one of the worst play-calling offensive coordinators I have ever seen in my life. If you know anything whatsoever about football, please go watch the last 3 Bengals playoffs games.

• They never run double tight despite having 2 high potential pass-catching TEs and a good o-line.
• They ran 3 routes maximum on pass plays.
• They rarely ran any crossing routes which are so easy to spring these days with new rules of ICT.
• They were extremely lackluster in providing a creative way of getting AJ Green the ball.
• They ran like 20 out routes with nothing inside against the Chargers despite San Diego's weak ILBs.
• The Chargers literally said after the game that they prepared for every single thing that Cincy did.

I blame Dalton for execution issues like everyone else, but it is plain as day that he was sabotaged partially by horrific play calling. They ran like 20 out routes with nothing inside against the Chargers.

I think you are guys are being a little overly critical of Gruden. The guys has a great a football background and to put all of Cincy's troubles on him is not fair. That said it probably helped to be sharing the name of a SB winner and I am pretty sure there were better choices out there.

Gruden coached in the Arena Football league, and Dan Snyder is trying to create an Arena Football team that just happens to play outdoors.

That's a big one. I believe even BB has said that in each game things are thrown at you that you haven't seen yet and need to adjust to on the sidelines.

This is the inherent danger in trading up to that degree. If the guy works out, it can be worth it. If the guy doesn't work out, you're in the same place you were, only without significant rebuilding assets.

In the case of Washington, it's a little bit of both. RG3 has shown signs of being the guy on the field, but has also shown some questionable (at best) leadership skills. In the meantime, they're lacking in some draft capital the next few years, so even if he "gets it" they're less likely to have built a solid team around him.

They've got their franchise QB
They've got a coach who's known for being able to work with his QBs
They'll pick high in rounds where they do have picks
They've got high money disappointments that can be cut for cap space instead of having to keep them because of dead money issues


It's not all cute and fuzzy bunnies for the Redskins and their fans, but it's a good day for them.
