In a wide-ranging interview Tuesday night, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said there's no guarantee of another cold-weather Super Bowl and also mentioned the possibility of future playoffs with more wild-card teams and a schedule that could include games on Friday and Monday in addition to the traditional Saturday and Sunday setup.

So if the Cowboys were to finish 20th then from next year onwards there would be 20 teams which qualify for the playoffs?

The whole point of playing hard every game goes out the window if teams with a 6-10 record make the playoffs. Teams will gladly rest their starters for the first 10 games of the season and then go on a 6 game winning streak to make the Playoffs.

Soon we will have a 160 game season with games played every day and teams will have a roster of 400 players with 10 QBs and all 32 teams will make the playoffs where all teams play against each other, Then finally SB will be comprised of 10 teams who fight for the ultimate prize (like we see in KING OF THE RING in WWE)

I can't possibly put into words how much I dislike this commissioner. I long for the good old days with Pete Rozelle or Paul Tagliabue, when you'd never even hear from them for years at a time.

Expanding the playoffs is a horrible idea, if nothing more than it forces the #2 seed to now play an extra game in the wildcard round, which takes away a major incentive for doing well in the regular season.

It's ALL about the almighty dollar with this guy, and he's never going to realize that the game is totally fine the way that it currently is. I admire his business sense in some ways, but I absolutely hate some of these changes.

I think the people who play football 40 years from now should be playing the same game players played 40 years ago.

Changing the play off format is just an awful idea.

Listen, I don't fault people for chasing the all mighty dollar but not to the detriment of the product. I've come full circle on Goodell. Frankly, I've had enough of him now.

Echoing what everyone else is saying, what an F'd up idea. While I don't take issue with the NFL considering ways to increase revenue, this is $$$ tunnel vision. Just a total disregard of anything but $$$$

So if passed by the owners: 7 playoff teams, seeding is now purely by record, only 1 team gets a bye. Super....
For god's sake, if they are going to change then just get the inevitable over with and expand it to 8 playoff teams now! IMHO having only one single team have a bye is intolerably stupid as well as competitively warped. Again if "they" are determined to change it, just change it to 8 teams now, get rid of the bye, then leave it the F alone (and while there at it they can go choke on their caviar and glass of chateau lafite rothschild).

That's a good point. I can see the possibility of more meaningless games because of this. But (repeat posting) I think the change is known within the inner circle as temporary (even if an unspoken one). They must know an 8 team playoff format (a la NBA or NHL) is the eventual reality. They just can't believe a 7 team format on a permanent basis is the right thing. Never mind the competitive aspects of it, it leaves more $$$ on the table by not having that 8th playoff team/extra game.

If/when 8 playoff teams happen, the next fun thing to watch is how will they schedule WC weekend when 8 games are to be played. The obvious answer is to play games at the same time. But the NFL playoff games gets super massive ratings that equals big money. Putting games on at the same time leaves money on the table. They will do everything possible to not play playoff games at the same time. But how they get 8 games on TV separately over a single weekend is the mystery.

I'd be more in favor of a 7-team playoff format than I would an 18 game regular season. I'm in favor of neither, but if I had to choose one out of inevitability I would go that route.

Unfortunately, my heart tells me we're eventually going to see both.

As others have mentioned, once it's probable that you don't get a one seed, start resting your "playing with injury" players for the playoffs. This will cause teams to tank games knowing they're still in the playoffs.

In today's NFL, December is exciting as teams fight for the Bye and battle to make the tight cut. Imagine a December where it's pointless to watch because you know there' s no series effort being put into a win and who beats who becomes meaningless.

He will do whatever he can to help the JETS franchise and if expanding the playoffs helps the JETS to get into the playoffs, then he is prepared to do it.

sickening money grab. So some poor team is going to play on Monday, then possibly get a Saturday game the next week? Or the inverse - a team plays on Friday, then doesn't play until next Sunday, that's a huge advantage.
