It has been 24 years since Belichick was hired in by the Cleveland Browns a team he coached from 1991 – 1995; since being fired Belichick has gone on to win 3 Super Bowls and be recognized as one of if not the greatest coach of all time.

In the 20 years since Belichick had his only winning season during his tenure there, Cleveland has endured:

•3 years without an NFL franchise
•15 losing seasons
•1 playoff appearance
•0 playoff victories

These coaches and front office personnel all have connection to Belichick and have been notable members of the Browns organization during that period.

•Todd Bowles
•Ernie Adams
•Frank Edgerly
•Romeo Crennel
•Jeff Davidson
•Eric Mangini
•Brian Daboll
•Michael Lombardi

That brings us to now; Josh McDaniels is rumored to be a top candidate for the head coaching job and Ryan Mallett is rumored to be a potential trade target (has been for 2 season now). January 1, 2015 was 20 years since the Browns won their last playoff game while being coached by Bill Belichick over us the New England Patriots. I see the irony and the weirdness in the fact that after 20 years of suffering the Cleveland Browns could fans could finally see their team win a playoff game with Josh McDaniels as their head coach and Ryan Mallett as their quarterback.

I wouldn’t mess with Belichick… this is too weird for me...

It has been 24 years since Belichick was hired in by the Cleveland Browns a team he coached from 1991 – 1995; since being fired Belichick has gone on to win 4 Super Bowls (1 as an assistant) and be recognized as one of if not the greatest coach of all time.

Since you put that in brackets I can only assume that's not a typo. Please do your research before posting false information. Thank you.

Curse of the Hoodino.

Since the team he coached is now the Ravens, not so connected. Cleveland is an expansion team.

What is Bowles connection with Belichick? I can't find one
Adams was there with Belichick and left when Bill was fired

You're right he has won 5 championships. It was an error, say I'm posting false information makes it sound like I was acting in malicious which wasn't the case.

That would only be true if they moved the entire city of Cleveland to Baltimore. Basically every NFL team is as different as the Browns now from 20 years ago whether they're expansion teams or not.

As far as the NFL is concerned, the team Belichick coached is still the Browns. The Browns franchise was suspended for 3 years, while the Ravens franchise was the expansion team to replace them who just happened to have the Browns' previous owner, and to simplify things, instead of a dispersion draft of the Browns players followed by an expansion draft for Ravens players, they just let the Ravens take on all the Browns players. And when the Browns were ready to return, they needed players so a player draft was held for them.

There's nothing that says the usual way we view franchise shifts is the correct way. The Ravens/Browns manner is just different than what we usually think of, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it. It's been used before -- otherwise we could say that Boston was the original home of the Indianapolis Colts.

FWIW, when Minnesota built Target Field, one part of the contract is that if the Minnesota Twins ownership wants to move, the franchise cannot move with them - the Ravens/Browns situation. I'd love it if all cities that use public funding to build a stadium would insist upon such language, as a way to recognize the public investment in the team.

You're right, I apologize for using that word. But what I was pointing to was that after Belichick was fired from the Browns he has only gone on to win 3 Superbowls. He won 2 Superbowls as an assistant before his time with the Browns.

It's all good I was in fact incorrect, I do appreciate the apology. Have a great night!

Huh? What are now the Browns, was an expansion team. The type of team that coaches get stuck with for their first jobs or fired without much success, which explains Crennel and Mangini more than any connection with Belichick's Browns, which became the Ravens.

Ernie Adams was with BB on the Browns/Ravens. Daboll was with the expansion Browns with Mangini after he was fired due to the Jets collapse, because what other jobs was he being offered?

My post was centered more around the fans and what they endured not the actual football team.

I think Bill still has a secret affinity for the Browns and would like to see them competitive. His father was a Paul Brown fan and he has spoken before about how innovative he was. They won 7 NFL Championships in 10 years back in the mid 40's to 50's. I think he regrets not having success there and it was his true dream job, especially when his father was still alive.

I appreciate you trying to weave a narrative, but the fact is they had no football for a bit, then were lousy as expansion teams often are for a while. Such teams are often where coaches go for first jobs or last jobs.

I didn't catch the connection to fans, you mentioned a lot of coaches names.

I just think it's bizarre that his presence has been such a presence in Cleveland ever since he left.

Paul Brown won 3 NFL Championships.
The other 4 you are referring to were in the AAFC.

Where, other than fanboy GM wannabe's on the internet are there rumors of a Mallett to Cleveland trade? Got any links? Thank you.
