I just saw his press conference where he said that he thought his record would not stand, especially if they moved to an 18 game season, and that "there wouldn't be an asterisk next it either"

He's referring to the 18 game season, I think.

Just like Maris had an asterisk when he past Babe Ruth in extra games.

There aren't asterisks next to 16 game records as opposed to the old 14 game standard played previously.

how can this even be construed as a "shot"?

was the conference in a cold or warm room?

Pretty sure he even say Brady will probably break it next year.

It's not like Manning and Brady hate each other, heard they pretty close friends.

Lots of haters loudly proclaim that everything the Patriots have ever accomplished in the Belichick-Brady era deserves an asterisk (even including and after 2007, because "they still must be doing something")

but I didn't take it that way

He was saying that all records are going down if there's an 18 game schedule and they'll still be treated as records with no asterisk next to them. And he's right. That's why there's no point getting wound up over Brady's record going down yesterday. That was inevitable.

COME ON!!!!!! Really?

No. The reality is what Marino did was more impressive under those rules etc.. than what manning and Brady did.

Now the question should be can Manning beat Tebow's Broncos playoff record? I am not so sure he can.

You're obviously very young (there's nothing wrong with that, btw, I'm quite jealous in fact).

Roger Maris had an asterisk after the number 61* in the official MLB record books at the insistence of the commissioner for years because he did it in a 162 game season as opposed to Ruth's 154 game season. In fact, HBO did a movie called 61*. It was kinda big thing in that other sport for many years.

Manning was making a DIRECT analogy to that. There is no slight against the Pats or Brady from his quote. In fact, he mentioned the different number of games in the prospective season.

He was trying so hard to sound humble. Anyone who isn't blind to this dude's bull$h!t can hopefully realize he only cares about stats more than anything. Minutes after the game in an interview he's already worried about it being broken, alludes to Brady, and a blame on the league for potentially extending the season to more games to make it happen. He even mentions how they probably won't put an asterisks on it.

******, how about the fact you almost fell behind to the worst team in the league because you refused to run the ball despite averaging almost 8 yards per run and threw the ball 5 times in a row deep in the redzone?

Can't stand this guy...

I agree that I think he cares about the stats...I think deep down, most players do. If you think he'd rather have break records at this point than win super bowls, then you'e just talking out of pure hatred for the guy. No player in his position would prefer anything more than winning super bowls. To think otherwise is stupid, and yes I do think he cares about the stats...but his #1 goal is blatantly to hoist the Lombardi.

The play calling was pretty awful for the most part yesterday, but if you think the press was more interested in that than in him breaking the record, you haven't quite figured out how the media works.

Pretty sure he even say Brady will probably break it next year.

^This. Broncos fans may not like Brady, and Patriots fans may not like Manning, but Brady and Manning are good friends.

When he said that about Brady breaking it next year I immediately suspected he read my post from December 5 saying exactly that: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...wed-record-books-post3669338.html#post3669338

I bet Manning scans the Pats message boards to see what the fans say about him breaking the record. I bet he obsesses over what is said about him like the comments about him playing in the cold that set him off.

The Brady vs Manning comparisons bore me and are inconclusive at best.

2 great HOF quarterbacks ... best is near impossible to define because it's a team game.

A helmet catch, missed interception, missed pass, an injured Gronk ...

then Brady has 5 rings but he's still the same QB ... those plays or a healthy Gronk would change the perception. Brady has had the better coach and the better GM ... other than that I think they are near even with each other.

There's no way Manning has time to scan message boards for stuff like that.

Manning is nothing but a class act.

Yesterday, he gave the entire team credit for the TD record. The split from INDY could have been ugly, but Manning handled it with grace and professionalism. You never hear of him in trouble for DUI or anything and he is a family man with the same woman.

It seems to me that Manning has character. Perhaps thats why Brady likes him.

Isn't it a requirement for Patriots fans to assume every comment about anything is a reference to Spygate?

If you actually read this thread, you would understand that only about 2-3 uninformed Pats fans have put forth that he is "taking a shot at us" and that the vast majority are saying "not at all".

But if it makes you feel better to make that generalization............
