Jay Glazer: Rex Ryan told his team "word on the street" is he is getting fired

Rex Ryan told his players in team meeting last night that word on street is that he's getting fired and asked players to fight w him these last 2 weeks.

I know it most likely would never happen, but I wouldn't mind Sexy Rexy being the Pats' defensive coordinator.

• There are things that could make it happen including:
• Rex and Belichick like each other
• Rex is going to want a high profile job that will earn him another head coaching gig. Turning around the Patriots defense and winning a Super Bowl with them would do that.
• Rex could spin learning under Belichick helping to make his a better and more rounded coach.

Of course hiring Ryan would be out of character for the Pats under Belichick.

I'd like him as a D Coordinator but it would never happen here under Belichick:

1. They both have big egos - Belichick would want his defensive gameplans implemented and Ryan would want control of the D himself

2. Belichick likes his coordinators to be under wrap - in New England the coordinators are to be seen and not heard. Ryan is a soundbite waiting to happen. Not a good match.

Dean Peas says hello. They wouldn't have to fire Matt Patricia, they could hire Rex in a similar role to the one they hired Dom Capers for. Similar to how Belichick was not officially the defensive coordinator for the Pats in '96 after he was fired by the Browns, Al Groh was.

Agree 100%. Rex would give the defense a new look .

Rex managed to go .500 with Sanchez/Smith. The doofus deserves another HC opportunity with a team that has a competent QB/offensive coordinator.

I hope the Jets don't fire him. Hell, they should sign him to a 4 year extension immediately.
He is poorly equipped to be a head coach in todays' NFL and I want him to stay with the Jets as their HC, as long as possible.
He is a very good DC however.

Detroit would be an interesting landing spot for Rex is Swartz get canned. Rex's record has exceeded the talent. If you give him all that talent in Detoit and couple him with a good OC that team might actually do something.

Houston is also interesting given the defensive talent but you need somebody to come in with him and groom Bridgewater so I don't love that as much.

First of course Rex did this as a motivational ploy to get his team up for the epic battle with the Browns.

Second, why would BB want to bring in a coach to play a style of defense that conflicts with his philosophy? Ryans defense is high risk, and just has not worked. You can have all of the yardage stats and bravado, I like keeping points off the board and winning.

Since Rex Ryan became HC of NYJ the Jets have allowed 1645 points and the Patriots have allowed 1582.
I do not understand why people seem to think he has a better defensive plan that we do.
We have 184 sacks and they have 175 so the Rex is aggressive and thats better idea is weak too.
Also in that same time we have 166 takeaways and they have 125, so in addition to keeping more points off the board, our defense has given more opportunity to the O.

Finally, if you want to try the 'they have been better lately' argument, umm, no.

Last 3 years we have allowed 984 points (7th) they have allowed 1105 (21st). Yes that is more than 40 points a year worse than us.
We also have more sacks 117 to 103 and more takeaways 100 to 64.

Someone needs to tell me why the team that ranked 7th in points allowed should bring in the guy whose team was 21st.

I really hope so. It would be sad to see him go and the Jets HC position being filled by a dull X and O type of coach. That would throw quite a bit of cold water on the rivalry.

Good/great defensive coordinator, bad head coach. His teams have resembled his father's Philly teams - thinking he could win by ignoring the need for both talent and a plan on offense. Dad at least had Randall Cunningham to run around and manufacture plays.

You just can't absolve him from the 5 years of offensive problems that have not gotten any better, and in fact have gotten steadily worse.
He is the HC. Part of the offensive issues are his philosophical influence, his choice to stick with Sanchez, and all of the other personell decisions, and locker room issues that were never fixed.

I have to completely disagree with this. Rex as the head coach of the Jets has completely ignored the offensive side of the team and has freely admitted this over the years. His team consistently exhibit poor discipline in that they often lead the league or are near the top of the league in penalties each year. His clock management has cost them games, his poor decision making has jeopardized full seasons (this one-sticking Sanchez in a meaningless pre season game behind a 3rd string O line, which forced the team to go to clearly not ready Gino Smith for the season). On and on it goes. The guy is a terrible head coach that went to two AFC Championship teams with anther coaches players. The guys is just a terrible head coach. Period!

You're assuming that he has GM control like BB does which he doesn't. What he had to do, is contend with a terrible manager in Tannebaum who was removed earlier this year.

Tannebaum is the one who drafted Sanchez and Gholston, and who frequently overruled Ryan on personnel decisions.
