Props to Panthers WR Steve Smith

I'm sure this kind of thing happens somewhat often but it doesn't get enough publicity compared to all the negativity in the NFL.

Late in the Saints-Panthers game last Sunday night, Smith scored a TD and brought the football back with him to the sidelines. He walked up to the stands and handed the ball to a young boy wearing a white Steve Smith jersey. It turned out to be the son of the one of the guys in my fantasy football league, a 5 year old die-hard Panthers fan at his first ever football game.

After the game they went to where the Panthers team buses were then Steve got off the bus to come over and sign the football for him. I didn't get the whole story about that until tonight, I had only seen the pictures. I thought they got lucky and he was walking out from the locker room and saw them. They actually told another player walking by that this was the boy Steve had given the ball to and asked if he'd be willing to sign it. The player went to the bus and told Steve, who then got off the bus at that point and came over.

Again, maybe this is pretty common. If it is, it's a shame you don't hear more about it. Regardless of whatever opinion any of us have about Steve Smith as a football player, props to him for doing something so simple that will be a lifetime memory for a young football fan.

There are far more good guys than turds in the NFL. Unfortunately, the turds get most of the coverage.

You can be both. Moss is a huge turd at times yet he's one of the most charitable people you'd ever come across. He does/did a lot of things without the media around and supported a lot of causes.

Late in '07 at Gillette, Vonnie Holiday was playing for the Dolphins and did the same thing iin pre-game. My son had snuck down to the front row while they were warming up and brazenly asked him for a ball. He walked away and came back 5 minutes later and handed it to my son. Classy move...

How's the view from your pedestal? Why don't you list all of your "nice gestures" towards society so that we can figure out what adjective anonomous self-important know-it-alls can attach to your kind.
At least back up your point....like..."one nice gesture". Google Steve Smith Panthers charity and pages of stories pop up regarding how Smith has given back. Maybe ask the OP why his friend let his 5 year wear a jersey of an "a-hole"....the "a-hole the Panthers have embraced since 2001.

I'll stay out of this, except to point out how laughable this is as an indicator of whether someone is a good person or not.

Google Steve Smith punching out his teammates (multiple occassions) or all the trash talking he does. He is a bad person who does some good things. Plenty of bad people do charity work doesn't mean they aren't bad people.

Lucas, though, had to be treated for injuries on the field before he was taken to the locker room. I'm sure that did wonders for his manhood and self-esteem. Of course, this isn't the first time Smith has hit a teammate after the whistle, so to speak. In 2002, he was suspended for a game after punching Anthony Bright during a film session.

Great guy! Sorry I disparaged such an upstanding individual as him.

BTW, the first thing Aaron Hernandez did after signing his contract last year was donated $50k to the Myra Kraft Foundation. Apparently, he is a great guy too because he does so much for charity. Who cares if he murdered a person or three? He is active in charity efforts. That makes him a great humanitarian.

C'mon, if Steve Smith doesn't win a Nobel Peace Prize for this, I don't know who deserves one. If Mother Teresa can win a Nobel Peace Prize for just helping the poor in Calcutta, it would be a joke for Smith not to win one for giving a fan a game ball because he was wearing his jersey. Feeding starving children is nothing like giving a kid a game ball.
