I think that was part of it, but I think the real reason the penalty was so harsh was a combination of the following:
  1. It was Goodell's rookie year and he felt (probably reasonably) that he could not look like someone who could be walked over.
  2. Related to that, Kraft is a very powerful owner and Goodell knew that if he stood up to Kraft the other owners would believe he could stand up to them as well.
  3. He knew he wouldn't get flak from the other owners because of jealousy of the Patriots on the part of the many of the other owners.
  4. By doing that the NFLPA couldn't say he always let owners off the hook and only disciplined players.

I really do think that if Cameragate happened in Goodell's, say, 5th year, or after the first time his contract was renewed, that the penalty would have been a lot less because he wouldn't have felt he had something to prove.

The main reason the punishment was so harsh by the league IMO was because it was the patriots who seem to have won with a lot of no name players and belichick who the media hates and potrayed as the ultimate villian. I can still remember weeks after this broke when steve young and schelerth said how much of a big adv it wouldve been for the pats to go into a halftime (12mins at most) check that tape, find out where the blitz is coming from throw the ball.It was so silly but the people at that crap up.
And the pats did one of the worst PR jobs in history in handling it.

It was clear what they were being punished for. It was clear that if anything else came to light they would be punished further.
The fact that people don't take the time to learn the facts isn't Bob Krafts fault, and its obvious no matter what happened people would believe what they want to believe.
You yourself are sitting here saying you don't know what they were punished for when it was clearly stated at the time. The John Tomase debacle couldn't have been handled before it was invented.

Once again, I did not say I did not know what they were being punished for.
You are on a roll today imputing statements to me that I did not make.

And to the 1st point, it is folly to assume that fandom understood or understands the issue. Certainly pundits have not as for years they have conflated the original camera placement offense with the invalid Tomase claims of filming practices and walk throughs.

I am responding to what I am reading. Either you are having a bad day writing or I am having a bad day reading.

That is kind of my point because no matter what happened then it would still not be understood.

My problem with Goodall is that he allows the perception to exist.
When that Moron from the Texans said he thinks the Pats still
cheat,Goodall should have said show me the evidence or prepared to
be fined.

Oops, I forgot to take the lens cap off. Could you look right here and deny that again? This time say it without the medical marijuana.

:rocker:

Gotta take 'em when we can get 'em.

Here's to hoping for a re-match in the playoffs!!

hope you guys make it to playoffs and make noise. you guys built a good team with many young passionate players. you guys went through a storm and didn't even blink. that shows a tremendous character from top to bottom in your organization. and you guys have a young stud in tannehill. I was so impressed with him. I didn't see much from last year, but the growth he has shown this year unbelievable especially with all the oline problems he had. i wonder what redskins fans are feeling right now.

i respect the rivalry, and i smell a true worthy adversary rising in miami. great game yesterday, and the fans really brought the 'hate' - i mean that in respectful way. it was really loud. i don't think i've ever seen fins fans that loud.
