This guy has been the quintessential "glue" type of player for the Pats that Nink and Slater were before they became "semi-stars". He fills in well in the secondary, is a key ST'er and you never hear any drama out of him. Add to that, he is highly intelligent and teammates have likened him to another coach on the field. Basically, he has been the perfect soldier for Belichick.

Then, to add to all that, I read this in today's Globe in the Pats notebook:

Despite adversity, Dolphins have grown tighter - Sports - The Boston Globe

"Cole has been doing something nice for others every day this month, simply as a way of giving back.

The 30-year-old has done some things through social media, giving away game tickets last weekend and offering tickets to this Sunday’s game in Miami, and also announcing he was going to see a movie, and anyone that showed up got in on him.

But a couple of times he’s done things unannounced, such as paying for everyone’s meal at Chipotle, or leaving an exorbitant tip for a burger.

The late Myra Kraft would be proud."

Every team needs more Marquice Coles on the bottoms of their rosters to make them stronger, smarter and better. This is the basic principle that superstar sniffers and whiffers like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones will never comprehend.

Always liked the guy and reading stuff like this makes me like him even more. He has got one of the best twitter feeds out there too. Always positive and a refreshing read.

Guy gets a bad wrap for the Super Bowl by some fans. To me, he is a player that tries hard, never dogs it out there and does the best he can with the talent he has. One hell of a special teamer and plays a big part in the nickel and dime packages.

He was terrible in the Super Bowl, but he has no business being asked to cover Boldin anyways... other than that, agree with this thread.

When the hell did he play for us in the SuperBowl? He never did.

We signed him March 2012.

I think BradyBranch39 is confusing the AFCCG last year (where Cole was pressed into service to cover Boldin when Talib went down) with the Super Bowl.

Makes sense. Patriot Missile mentioned him in the SuperBowl too

weird

Crypto-Jets fans. AFCCG loss=SB win

Agree with the OP. I've really come to appreciate Cole this year; he's fine as a 5th string CB but is reaching Slater levels of excellence as a special teams player. He is the ideal bottom of the roster player.

Cole is a lousy player. He's horrible when he's out there on the field as either a special teamer or a cover guy. More often than not, when he's out there, it's the guy he's supposed to be covering that is making the reception.

Not sure how you guys can claim he's reaching "Slater" levels on special teams when he's the guy who isn't getting it done out there on special teams more often than not. It's why the Pats felt they could cut him easily and not have to worry about the coverage.

It's nice that Cole is such a nice guy off the field. It means he's pretty humble. Great. Because as a football player, his days are numbered and the only reason he's there is because Dowling didn't pan out.

I've truly always liked him on this team. I have no problem with him, even for his performance in the AFCCG last year. Hope he gets a chance at redemption this year and seizes it.

On the same note of the OP, I saw him tweet maybe a week ago that he was going to "troll a store to find someone to pay for all their stuff." That made me smile.

Opinion noted.

I'll just side with the greatest coach in NFL history - someone who has broken down film since he was 8 years old:

Patriots? Marquice Cole excels at backing people up - Sports - The Boston Globe

"“He’s an experienced player,” Belichick said. “He has good experience both outside, inside and actually even at safety as well. He’s smart, a real versatile player that has good speed, good toughness for his size. He’s not the biggest guy, but he plays with good playing strength and toughness, runs well.

“He understands all the different positions, the components of them and how to utilize his help because he understands where it’s coming from, based on his experience.”

Many a defensive back will tell you that practice is vital to refine footwork and technique, and any time away can lead to some rust.

But most of the time, Belichick noted, Cole has had to play cornerback in a game without the benefit of practice snaps, and he’s responded to the challenge.

“He learns quickly and he’s a pretty instinctive player. Just a lot of times we’ve thrown him in there the last couple years without maybe a lot of practice reps, somebody has gotten hurt during a game or whatever, and he goes in there and has just done a good job,” Belichick said. “I think he’s a valuable guy to have; he’s helped us out a lot.”

They cut him due to injuries, not poor play. He has, since he was signed, been one of our best ST players, no matter how much you want to deny it.

Agree. Reliable and ready. Can't ask for more than that.

Had just gotten done reading the replies before I posted mine, so Missile's must have subliminally been lurking in my head. Of course there was no NE-Balt Super Bowl!

Let's just keep him off the defense, please.

As soon as he comes in for Arrington, he and Gregory get smoked for a TD. I'm not his biggest fan.

By all accounts he's a good guy, and he should be commended for that. Incidentally, he can't cover.

Really? Reliable and ready?? Guess you missed the game today. 1 play. 1 opposing TD. That is why Cole should not be out there. Ever.
