Is this even a fair question or is Peyton Manning so thoroughly out classed by Joe Montana's achievements that to even mention them together is completely laughable considering Peyton Manning's abysmal post season record?

Further more, if it is a laughable absurdity to compare Peyton Manning against Joe Montana, based on their accomplishments, is it fair to say that Peyton Manning actually piggy-backs on Tom Brady's shoulders into the GOAT conversation due to them being compared as the two best of their generation?

I think that's an interesting point that I never see raised anywhere.

Tom Brady can be compared to Joe Montana.
Montana: 4 Superbowl championships and 16 post season victories.
Brady: 3 Superbowl rings, 5 Superbowl appearances, 17 post season wins.

Peyton Manning.... simply cannot.

Montana: 4 Superbowl championships and 16 post season victories.
Manning: 1 Superbowl Championship, 2 Superbowl appearances, most first round post season eliminations by a starting quarterback.

Peyton Manning leeches his way on Tom Brady into the best of all time discussion.

He really has no business being there at all, and were he not compared to Brady, by virtue of their team and generational rivalry, he wouldn't be in that discussion at all.

Fair statement?

Or can you argue Peyton is in Montana's league without invoking Tom Terrific as a bridge to get him there?

"Peyton Manning.... simply cannot."
Do you truly ******* understand how great and talented those 49ers teams were without a salary cap?

Yup.
Point?

Yup.
Point?

Point? Montana was a great quarterback, but any decent qb would have won a lot with those teams.

Manning is one of the best ever. Deal with it. I feel like we're all lucky to see the transition as led by Manning, Brady, and Brees.

If it wasn't for the rivalry and the my-brother-is-bigger-than-your-brother attitude, more people could look back on the last dozen years as a truly amazing rivalry between two superb athletes.

Bird and Johnson, Williams and DiMaggio, Manning and Brady.

Heck, Ali and Frazier!

It's an advantage? Look at where those 49ers Ds were ranked when Montana won SBs.

What did Indianapolis' defense have to do with Manning going full ****** on what would need to be a game winning drive?

Answer: Nothing.

You forgot one very important stat:

Manning: 58,372,106 horses he looks like
Brady: 0 horses he looks like
Montana: 0 horses he looks like

Manning is one of the best ever. Deal with it.

That's a baseless assertion. Those are easy to make.

Mark Sanchez is one of the best ever. Deal with it.
(See? No evidence needed.)

So how can you possibly put Manning in the same league as Montana?
More than "deal with it" might make your case a little more compelling.

Don't see it happening.

Yup.
Point?

The dynasty 49ers would wipe the floor with any team tom brady has had and any team peyton has ever had.

Those 49ers were stacked on both sides of the ball.

I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying Montana had an edge when it comes to the goat discussion vs Brady/Manning

HAHAHAHA!!! I think peyton, marino, and brady would have better stats if they were on those 49er teams.

So? They're different eras (even if that was true).
They were also playing competition that had the benefits of the lack of a salary cap. Montana was also playing at a time when quarterbacks were treated like football players.

He still has four championships, some of which required some of the most clutch, comeback drives in NFL history.

So we're letting Manning, Mr. One&Done, get compared to him directly.... how? By whining about Peyton's defenses which are A. irrelevant and B. why he was able to have such a strong offense that he used to stat-compile.

Wow...you're right. Every football expert on the planet disagrees with you, but when you're right, you're...

LOL, Ya, gotta' watch out for those "football experts," like the geniuses at ESPN who last year claimed, and I quote, "Colin Kaepernick may be the greatest quarterback ever."

Sorry, but we're not saying outlandish things here to get ratings, so we can afford to actually be, oh, I don't know, honest?

Manning is no better than Ben Roethlisburguer, end of story.

All that matters are rings.

Eli can be inserted in this discussion, Peyton not.

All that matters is stats?

Because

Rings = team accomplishment, nothing to do with QB.

Stats = Individual accomplishment, nothing to do with team, QB passes the ball to himself while supplying his own pocket protection, etc.

Right.

There are a lot of people in the media that say Manning is better than Brady. Even more media folks have compared Montana and Brady for years. I don't think I've ever seen a media piece comparing Manning to Montana. When all the current mediots have faded away, history will remember Brady as one of the greatest ever and Manning as great.

Ok, so Terry Bradshaw is better than TFB?

EXACTLY MY POINT!

People forget that the very first year Marino hung up his boots, fans of the day still argued he was GOAT status due to his stats. "It was just a shame he never got that ring."

They did the same exact thing with Dan Fouts.

I know with both of them, and saw with Marino in particularly, that these GOAT arguments at the time were purely emotional attachment, and their presence in the GOAT discussions did not stand the test of time.

Stats always lose to rings in the long haul. Stats are only relevant to conversation while the players are playing. After retirement, they fade quickly from the conversation.

There were plenty of Marino Vrs Montana conversations back in the day, and plenty of people were on the side of Marino. Now, all these years later, nothing has changed about the ammunition that was used on each side.
The only thing that's changed is now the only people who actually say Marino are 60 year old jaded Dolphin fans.

It will be the same for Brady vrs Manning.

Time will erode Manning from the conversation.
Brady will remain forever.

Bradshaw is actually way underrated in all time lists, unfortunately.
Four rings is an epic as hell.

If TFB gets #4, something I always wanted to see was a photograph of him standing with Montana and Brady all holding out four fingers.
