This Patriots offense with Keenan Allen instead of Dobson

Without trying to open a can of worms about Collins, although that may be a byproduct, it seems to me that this sort of "what it?" would be better aimed at Collins, not Dobson, based upon how the various rookie seasons have played out so far.

For starters, we might have better health at WR, but worse depth at LB.

Allen is definitely more NFL ready. I believe Dobson will do some great things here, but it's just a matter of when, and how much he has the potential of doing.

Allen's been the better receiver as a rookie, but it's too soon to be declaring that the Patriots took the wrong receiver of the two. Clearly, neither has busted, at least to this point. The rest we'll learn moving forward.

Yep agree both WR's are fine and it's too early to tell how they will go in their careers.

Dobson is injured atm so it looks like a case of "out of site out of mind" for pats fans with a memory shorter than 2 weeks.

Collins his going to be good I love the pick...he's a far cry for unathletic Hightower.

Well, I would assume that the Patriots would have gotten a LB somewhere rather than going into the season with fewer of them. They might not have drafted Boyce, or Thompkins might have been cut, or something like that, but I can't see BB saying "Well, we had our chance to add a linebacker, but we drafted a WR instead, so I guess that's it."

One thing we can be sure of, if Keenan Allen was producing, he'd probably be seriously injured at this point of the season and thus not be very helpful for our playoff run.

Collins his going to be good I love the pick...he's a far cry for unathletic Hightower.

Wonder if they would shake things up a bit and let Collins play the Mayo role instead. I think Hightower will be back on track next season back in his rookie season role.

Weaknesses

Hasn’t faced many top-level defenders during his career.

Owns strider’s speed, and NFL corners will make it more difficult for him to get into his routes. Not a burner, will have trouble creating consistent separation.

The inconsistency of his blocking technique requires some work;

No problem here ... Belichick knew what he was drafting and Dobson needs some time.

I thought he drafted him as an outside the lines possession type to open up the middle because Lloyd really failed to do that last year. We needed a stretch the field sideways receiver for the last few years. I think the old fashioned stretch the field receivers are not as helpful as the open the field horizontally type in today's NFL ... the safeties and corners are extremely athletic and combined with pass rushing beasts they can render your deep threat useless ... and we saw that in the Giants Super Bowl.

I slightly remember that Brady was timed as one of the quickest ever in throwing the sideline pass ... if I am wrong I am sure someone can correct that ???

I don't think you can ignore the fact of Collins' athleticism. In hindsight, I think when Collins fell to us in the second round, he was a lock because of that rare athleticism. BB likes that upside , particularly in the second round. Didn't he say in one of those Holley books that the 2nd round is where you take first rounders who have fallen because they lack something. Collins had first round athleticism and skills but didn't have the experience. On the other hand, Allen was a slow gimpy WR. Why take two Dobson's when you can get one Dobson and someone with that level of athleticism?

Just noticed this. Collins was the top performer in the broad jump in the last eight years at the combine and one of the best performers in the vert. One other player who also was near the top in both disciplines is Darius Butler, another BB second rounder.

I think he was right, tthat he supplemented it with Boyce and Thompkins means they really won't need to do anything more than re-sign Edelman to have a really good receiving corps next year

Don't forget there are two guys in Mark Harrison (who I think Bill might envision taking a Hernandez type role) and TJ Moe that will have had a year sitting in meetings and learning the playbook.

Ben Watson and David Givens are, while not precise, at least approximate counterexamples.
