Why did people think that the read option was going to be the wave of the future in the first place? Most offensive trends in NFL history have found a way to be defensed. The read option was no different.

I always read Easterbrook as I find some of his writing entertaining (I have to skip his poilical and space ramblings, however). However, it always irks me that while praising his genius, he takes regular digs at BB and the Pats in general along the "cheating" or "bad sportsmanship" lines. This week he saved it for the end of the column where he talked about the end of the Carolina game where Gronk was held, but pointed out that this week Gronk wasn't held on the same play, but instead pushed off and got away with offensive PI in the endzone. Then he speculates that the reason the Carolina guy held Gronk was to avoid being shoved himself. Huh? And after the Pittsburgh game BB was chided for running up the score (a regular complaint of TMQ about BB), but I haven't seen one complaint about Denver (or anyone else who won by a large margin) doing that this year. He also failed to mention that the Pats weren't chucking it at the end of the Pittsburgh game, but were running (and running down the clock) and Pittsburgh had given up. Usually his running-up-the-score rant has to do with the Pats chucking it everywhere, but since the Pittsburgh game didn't fit the mold he didn't mention how they were scoring.

His compliments to the Pats are back-handers, but somehow I can't look away...

I wish people wouldn't post stuff from this tool. His Spygate stuff was insufferable, and I'm not even sure that's the worst of his journalistic transgressions.

F*** him. There is no such thing as a good read by Easterbrook. Shame on you for suggesting it's possible.

Gregg Easterbrook sucks. Even now, his entire premise hinges on ignoring the 'next-generation' quarterbacks who are succeeding, namely Newton.

Kaepernick is struggling because, up until last week, his team had one credible wide receiver. Also because I'm still not convinced that he's a good quarterback, independently of all of all of the read option stuff. He locks onto his first read as badly as Matt Schaub does, with similarly predictable results.

Griffin is struggling because he's coming off of a really bad knee injury on a team that lacks draft picks or cap space to improve itself in any way (and is below league-average in talent to begin with). Also because the few offensive weapons that he has can't stay on the field.

In short, Easterbrook is still an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about. Could just as easily have written an article proclaiming that the struggles of Flacco, Ryan and Schaub further prove that the traditional pocket passer is on the decline.

The first job for a QB is to be able to throw and complete passes.

The second job is consistency. That means playing every game. I personally don't think that guys like Eli, Flacco, Ryan are elite, but they play every game. They provide that consistency for their team which is the reason they are usually in the playoffs despite not having the impact as a Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees

I believe he is a good writer and some times offers some good humor, but he is not a football guy. He strikes my as another Skip Bayless. He can be entertaining, but he constantly takes shots at the Pats, which is just annoying. Even in this article he writes the Pats got jobbed with the Panthers call, but has to point out that Gronk got away with a pass interference with Denver and probably wanted to commit the same penalty before the defense beat him to the punch. Lame.

Yes, but not because of his running (9 carries for 20 yards) or the read option. He was more accurate throwing the ball downfield than he has been all year - though some of that may have had to do with Washington's defense as well.

I agree on your views w.r.t his Cameragate stuff but I find his non-football writings pretty interesting.

That Washington defense is awful. They played man coverage and 7 in the box every play.

Easterbrook is a recognized Anti-Semite which has caused him to be suspended from writing for ESPN in the past. This in part colors his hatred for the Pats in the so called Spygate incident. He has no credibility regarding football and there is no reason to read anything he writes.
