Before long, games can be flexed at any time. If a game starts looking good at halftime, it'll be continued on Tuesday night.

Huge slap in the face of the fans who actually travel to the games but they aren't where the money is, the money's in the TV contracts so from a business perspective this makes a ton of sense.

Someday we'll wake up on Tuesday morning to this: "Roger Goodell has flexed the Patriots' home game vs. Miami this Sunday to London at 1 a.m. EST. Any New England fans still wishing to attend the game can buy a seat on our deluxe trans-Atlantic charter service for only $1,825 per person. Game ticket and transportation to the stadium not included."

Not really different than the college game, when 1-2 week notice is usually what you get for start times.

Only a minor PITA for fans going to the game unless they are from out of town and then it might be worse.
When the NFL is asking for billions in cash then the NFL has to back that up with some attractive games.
Because things change, flexing helps in that matter.

my kid has soccer games most Sundays around 1:00 - 2:00.

Just make the games pay per view. We can watch them anywhere, anytime, maybe on Netflix.

Won't need anymore stinkin' stadiums, and all the whining fans.

Just use Madden fans in the background. They could play the games in front of a bluescreen, and mix and match players and uniforms.

In fact the NFL should just by the rights to Madden, and just show those games every week.

No more players union,no more free agency and signing bonuses, no more drug test problems, no more concussions.

Goodell can make it happen ! He has the power !

The league knows that real fans are being priced out of the games and it is becoming a corporate event. Plus 50 plus inche HD TVs have made it better for many fans just to have a football party at home. They are all about the TV experience now.

I am no longer a season ticket holder, but I don't know if I would have minded this or not. Most of the time, I wrote off the entire day for football on home games because going to the game is at least a good 8 hour event between traveling, tailgating, and the game. So moving the game back three hours wouldn't really affect my day all that much.

Blaming him is pointless though. All he's doing is what the owners want him to do. People act like he's single handily making these decisions. He will always do what the owners tell him to do, period.

All the NFL and it's owners care about is making more money, blame the owners. Hell, Kraft is one of the guys who really wants the NFL to have a team in London.

As for this, yeah, this sucks. A lot of people are going to be screwed adjusting their schedules to make sure they're able to catch a game only to have it changed the week before.

He unilaterally judged the Pats and ripped off their 1st round draft pick PLUS a million dollars, despite the glaring, blatant conflict of interest as a former Jet employee...he unilaterally went after the Saints and had it blow up in his face and HE is the one that has asked for an independent arbitrator to decide the Miami issue. If ,as you seem to believe, the owners TELL Goodell what to do, none of this would have ever happened. Time after time he has displayed the tact and diplomacy of a one eyed bull in a china shop. There HAS to be a better choice for commissioner out there than this mutt.

This has been discussed before ad nauseam. Goodell absolutely DOES have wide autonomous latitude to launch initiatives. The owners don't give him a laundry list of tasks, they give him general parameters in terms of concepts and policies.

Perhaps, but to the extent the initiatives come to fruition it's because the owners are OK with them.

Goodell could push (for example) a team in London all he wanted, but if the owners didn't want it to happen it wouldn't happen.

Same here -- if the owners didn't like this new flex expansion, it wouldn't happen.

So if you want you can blame Goodell for thinking stuff up, but when it happens, you need to blame the owners, not Goodell, for encouraging/allowing it to happen.
