Why Welker Trade Is A Solid Win For Pats FO

Oh people, come on. The Dolphins pull off one of the most pathetic facing saving trades in NFL history and some fans here want to beef about giving up a 7th?

Wow, instead of just caving into reality and taking the second rounder forced by the Pats signing Welker to a contract the Fins wouldn't match, - and the Pats didn't really want to execute - the Fin's FO bullies the Pats into including a nearly meaningless 7th round pick. Ouch.

This is a win by by the Pat's FO. Why?

Instead of risking having to pay Welker a contract designed more to force the Fins to let him go than what the Pats would pay hm as a UFA, the Pats have duped the Fins into handing him over without making the Pats overpay Welker to simply to secure his services. How could anyone dispute that swapping a seventh rounder in exchange for negotiating freely with a RFA isn't a coup by the Pats?

The Pats deplete the Fins roster of one of their most dependable players AND do so by convincing the Fins to allow Welker go to their mortal enemy AND work out a deal not constrained by the RFA rules which would have forced the Pats to offer money they were certain was beyond the window Miami had in mind.

Unless you think you know more than BB and are certain Welker wasn't worth a 2nd then you should be applauding the Pats for grabbing a player they really wanted under terms far more favorable than they would have been without this deal.

I thought a 2nd was high along with the money,but I think welker is a young guy with a high upside.
Could be the 2nd coming of Troy and if he is, he's a bargain.
Throwing in a 7th,means nothing.
7th rd pick is usually training camp fodder anyway.

I think they learned last year that you cannot let things drag out too long. They waited for Branch and they waited for Law, and all they got was screwed. So this year they are making decisive decisions annd moving on! Good for them, better for the team!

If the announced numbers of $10.75mil guaranteed are correct then my premise the Pats fleeced the Fins stand even more to point. How could the Fins have let a young, productive, team leader to depart without matching this number if they had had the opportunity?

For a seventh rounder the Fins let us off the hook for millions in bonus money...

Yes, it all becomes even clearer as the hours go by and more news comes out - the Fins ( I bet caught up in a little too much of the new coach - "well, I never picked him" - attitude) prematurely folded and allowed the Pats to put the screws to them.

As for that silly other thread about Kraft caving into league demands before those of his team - Kraft actually was a star owner this weekend and today. He didn't sell out to the NFL; he helped bamboozle the Fins into thinking that handing over Welker without forcing the Pats to sign him to a unmatchable offer was a good deal in exchange for a nothing much 7th rounder.

Fins fans are the ones who were sold out...

I don't mind the 7th round pick because it's usually just a throwaway anyways (where are Spencer Nead, Ethan Kelley, Antwoine Womack, Andy Stokes, T.J. Turner, Casey Tisdale, or Owen Pochman, to name a few, now?). Sure, sometimes you get a hit on a guy like Givens, Tully, or Pass, but I'm sure we'll get some compensation picks that will be only a few selections later to make up for it anyways.

I didn't say we fleeced the Fins by getting Welker for a 2nd round pick. if you read more closely you'll see my point is that we fleeced the Fins out their leverage on Welker as a RFA by giving them a near meaningless 7th. The Fins allowed us to work a deal with Welker that was good for us, not a deal higher than we wanted to pay, in exchange for a 7th rounder - the 2nd was a done deal anyway. So we get Welker with a favorable deal and Miami looks flacid in the process.

The Fins FO was cowed into submission by the Pats or they just made a bad call. They could have held their ground and said, look, the league may not want the poison pill routine but its a big jump from there to just standing by and watching a division opponent take one of our most popular players AND do so at a number they are happy with! One of the points of the RFA system is not only the compensation in picks but the leverage to force a team to sign away a player at number higher than what he's likely worth so his original team won't match and keep him.

Welker wasn't going to stay anyway. Mueller is all about speed at WR and welkers 4.6 speed just wasn't doing it for the fins. Mueller just wanted compensation and he got it... honestly it's a good deal for all parties. Pats get a player they need with a reasonable contract, Fins get compensation for a player they never drafted and were trying to trade anyways...everyone is happy.

You are looking at this all wrong. Yes, they could have gotten him for just a 2nd rounder because the phins were NOT going to match. However, they could have drug it out with the league because of the poisen pill, forcing him to be out of our training camp until it was all settled (and just the uncertainty of not knowing if we are set at WR). More importantly, we would have been on the hook for that huge contract with all the bogus money that was only heaped in there to make the poisen pill effective (it would become guaranteed money on them).

For a 7th rounder, we don't rock the boat (pissing off the league and other teams and generally getting bad PR), we get the player into camp early, and we have the freedom to negotiate with him as if he is a UFA instead of a RFA. That is getting quite a bit for a mere 7th round pick.
