Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I'm sure this will be a controversial thread, but...

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

He'll be a Patriot by the weekend so long as there isn't an injury issue.

Edit: I have no idea what's left in the tank so I shouldn't be so certain but he's just the type of player BB likes to sign even if it's just for a look.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Anyone seen much of Reed this year? How much speed has he lost? If he hasn't lost too much speed, I could see BB bringing him in for another S/LB hybrid experiment.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I'm not sure he'd be an upgrade on Duron Harmon at this point.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

If he makes it to them sign him immediately. He isn't what he was but he's still a player that could make a real difference if healthy down the stretch. He's already been paid most of what he's owed, this is a no brainer. I really hope he makes it to them.

On the other hand he may not have to clear waivers. He may just be an UFA.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I think he'd be a very good pickup given the injury to Gregory. At the very least his presence would benefit McCourty, Harmon and Wilson.

I would take my chances, Belichick would know very quickly if he can still play.

I think he has to clear waivers since it's past the trade deadline but I could be wrong.

I wouldn't mind if he signed here but I wouldn't get too excited. He got cut for a reason. Maybe that reason was that his contract was too big, but that doesn't typically happen during the season since they're paying his full salary anyway.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

For all the bashing Belichick got for not signing him this offseason, he was right. The guy is done. The Texans gave him huge money for his name value and not much else.

That said, he might be worth bringing in at the veteran minimum to see if they can salvage him for anything.

Or he could just look at film from this season and see that he can't play.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Reed has the best instincts of any safety to ever play the game, even if he has lost a step he's going to read plays faster than anyone else out there. I can't see them passing on him, and I think Reed would come if they want him.

I can't imagine he became done overnight. He was pretty solid last year.

FWIW he said their team was outcoached this weekend. They had no choice but to cut him.

he has nothing left in the tank....no

Some team before the pats will try and claim him anyways

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

And even if he wouldn't play one down for the Patriots, his experience and knowledge would be invaluable for Devin McCourty. He already plays at an All-Pro level, wouldn't hurt to let one of the best safetys to ever play the game coach him for a few months.

It really is a no brainer with Gregory out.

If nothing else, it would make Ratbird fans physically sick to their stomachs. Player-coach role?

Nah, he was very average last year at best. He got burnt often on plays beyond 15-20 yards. Plus he had a significant hip injury that kept him out of the entire offseason and the first few games.

He was demoted prior to last week. He was sucking really bad in Houston.

He would be a good stopgap until Gregory gets back, but I would rather have Gregory at this point. Gregory is having a solid season.

Just bring him in to practice for a week or two and tell Harmon to just watch him all practice long. Not many rookies get to learn from a future hall of famer. No downside to bringing him in.

Also, we play the Texans in 3 weeks and that's part of BB's MO too. And with Chris Jones and Cierre Wood, the Texans are becoming a bit of a farm team for us.
