We gave up a 2004 4th round pick for Ted Washington before the 2003 season. He wasn't even on the team anymore by the time the 04 draft came around. Two players taken shortly after that pick were Jerricho Cotchery and Nathan Vasher. I don't think anyone here is going to complain about that decision.

We gave up a 2nd round pick for Corey Dillon in that same draft. I don't think anyone here regrets that decision. So that being said, I can't understand how so many are going ape over the fact that we gave up a 2nd and 7th for a 25 year old that is cut from the mold that the Patriots love their WRs to be.

He's improved every year he's been in the NFL. He looks ready to break out. Again, he's 25 and we're going to lock him up long term. Any 2nd rounder we got could only be signed to a 4 year deal and there is no guarantee that he would work out. If he did, there's less guarantee that we could re-sign him.

Again, I just don't get it. It'd be nice to still have that 60th pick, I'm not going to lie. However, it's worth it. Welker should have an immediate impact and be a good player for us for years.

what he said

Because sometimes this fan base (and particular this board at times) gets a little goofy about draft picks. I don't even mean that in a bad way either and of course, having a phemon #6 QB probably exacerbates it some.

Everyone see's potential difference makers in every late round 2nd day pick. That not always realistic, but you never know. 2nd and above for already developed guys (particulaly young) can add immediate help (which we need at WR).

As for this deal. This deal is a absolute STEAL for a 2nd. Welker has a huge upside and is well along in his development. That 7th was the 4th from last overall, and a total garbage pick. Tossing it in exchange for a more cap friendly deal is a more than acceptable to me. I was leary of that poison pill story floating about.

:yeahthat: :rocker:

4th, 5th, 6th and so on, it is not a big deal.. it is a very good deal for us, and one that will bring smiles to our faces when we win the next superbowl. I like this deal, like this guy and what he brings to our team.

Without not knowing the details, I think the extra 7th will save us cap space and allow for more room to maneuver.

As of now, w/o a new deal, he is ours at the $1.3 mill tender I would assume.

Pass me some kook-aid and sign me up for this bandwagon. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a steal, but it was a fair value deal that helps the Pats.
