Did the Kraft family just surrender a 7th round draft pick so that they could look good in owners meetings?

Until now, I have always defended them against charges that they were cheap or that they wouldn't do whatever was necessary to help the Patriots win.

I feel betrayed. I hope that somebody comes up with an explanation of how this will help the team in the long run.

No. The 7th round draft pick means the Pats can sign Welker for millions less than what they would have to pay him under the poison pill plan.

WE have two first round picks.
We still have our own 3rd, 4th, and 2 / 6 round picks. That's 6 draft picks.
We are not even factoring in the compensation picks that we will get for Adam, Chatam, Givens, Dwight, and Ashworth.

Maybe, but that's just a side benefit. The millions saved for the team and cap in the difference between what they will now pay Welker and what they would have been obligated to pay him under the poison pill is the real reason.

WTF??? Isn't a 7th round pick worth a) not using a poison pill and pissing off other teams b) more importantly, getting to sign Welker on our own terms without having to worry about creating a contract that the Phins won't accept.

WOW!! I have been waiting to see how a certain segment of the "Pats Fans" on here would be able to use something from this offseason to dog the Krafts, BB etc..

But I have to be honest - I thought there would be a little more creativity behind it.

Maybe if we all chip in, we can put together enough money for NE to sign one of the UDFA that might be available just a scant 20 players or so after Miami gets theirs.

7th rounder and a chance to get him for fair money rather than the Pandora's Box of a poison pill, knowing all well how that could end, with us on the end of one eventually just like we were when Parcells took Martin from us almost a decade ago. I like this route rather than us thinking of a way to work and word a contract in which Miami didn't/couldn't match. If it gives up a 7th rounder but saves us some cap space, so be it, with this roster, that pick would have been camp or PS fodder anyway.
