Pats Compsensation Picks

Alot of people seem to be complaining about giving up picks to get Welker. One thing to keep in mind is New England is going to get AT LEAST 3 extra compensation picks from the nfl for all the free agents we lost last year. Maybe a pick as high as a 4th, def a 5th and couple more. SO giving up the extra 7th to get welker, if no big deal considering we will get another one shortly

Poor logic in this case because you are placing value on a 7th round pick. Comp picks can not be traded and there is no way in hell 7 - 8 rookies make this football team.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats traded picks for future years for this reason.

At this stage cap value of roster players is more important to the Pats than low draft picks. Without the contract numbers its hard to tell, but they must be somehow getting cap value by trading more than the tender for Welker.

Jonathan Kraft seems to believe it could go as high as a 3rd due to the new salary cap changes.

even without the comp picks the thought here is you add a 7 to the manuever and dont have to sign some deal that includes alot of money backloaded for a poisin pill. now he is yours and under contract for at least one year which gives you leverage in a longterm deal which I am sure will come with this trade.

Usually I'm amazed at how sensible you are, but I disagree with you on this one. Look at how many picks we have, how many roster spots we have, and the draft value chart value of a 7th rounder and you will see we have given up nothing that we were going to be able to use. That was 2002 and the "NoPick" was a hesitation to pick. It was the last pick of the regular phase of the draft, the last pick that could be traded since all the rest were compensation picks. The clock ran out and two or three teams jumped in and selcted players ... too bad they didn't take the player the Patriots selected ... David Givens.

Oh please. There is little difference between a seventh rounder and an undrafted player. A seventh rounder should not be bothering you this much.

As another poster recently observed, David Givens, Patrick Pass, Tully Banta Cain and Matt Cassel are all recent seventh round picks.

Do you seriously think that those players had no value?

Since the Pats roster can only accept 5-6 rookies MAX, who cares about a 7th round pick. It was going to be used on a blocking dummy anyway.

I'm 110% with you on this fgssand. I also think it's a steal by the Patriots. Not only do they get Welker, but now Miami lost it's one true passing threat (unless you're afraid of Chambers).

I think some people are balking at the second round pick, but think what we've done with our second rounders.. Hit and miss over the past seven years. For every Matt Light there's a Bethel Johnson.

Corey Dillon was a great trade that involved a second rounder. I expect that this Welker trade to work out the same way, only Welker is 25. If we've forgotten, the Patriots often target 'older' rookies, so many of our draft picks are around age 25 anyway.

Look at it this way:

We traded up in the second round using a seventh and 'drafted' a 25 year old WR that has three years of NFL experience and has shown consistent improvement, productivity, and playmaking ability.

There is nothing to dislike about this.

I've had the 'advantage' of watching way too many Dolphins games over the past few years (living in Stuart FL, makes sense) and Welker is a gem. Tom Brady is going to LOVE this guy.
