If true that pisses me off, there is NO reason to pay more than the RFA #2. None whatsoever.

That's BS. Even a second round it's too much.

This is a done deal? Or just King speculating?

Unless we get him at the price of the tender? Or less than what the offer sheet was?

Not sure of the ins and outs of that, but that is the only thing that would make sense.

Well there really aren't many roster spots open on this team, so it seems pretty unlikley that a 7th rounder could do much for us...but why would the Pats make that trade? That must be one bitter poison pill they tried to throw in that offer...

Right, the only way it makes sense to give up more than a #2 would be if we offered him a dirt cheap contract that Miami could easily match. Any kind of big money ($2M or more) deal in which we give us more than a #2 is flat out stupid. Not that a #7 would kill us but it would still be stupid.

If they swap their 1st round position with us, makes sense.

The only logic that I see here is that teams are very reluctant to open the hornet's nest of the poison pill.

If the Patriots give up a 7th round pick in addition to the 2nd rounder and avoid a quid pro quo where another team uses the poison pill against them it's worth it.

I've had the feeling that there's a bit of a gentleman's agreement among the GMs and that once teams start breaking it, the floodgates will open.

Could always flip it for a #6 next year more than likely.

My guess is the Pats organization (read Bob Kraft) wants nothing to do with being involved in a poison pill deal. So if they want Welker badly enough they'll have to pony up more than the 2nd that the Dolphins pinned as Welker's value to them.

For God's sake, why do so many people think a second rounder is a slam dunk? Welker is an already-established talent and he's only going to get better in New England.

Also, we have two #1's...that should take some of the sting out of it.

This makes the most sense to me.

:ditto:

If anything, Miami should be giving us THEIR 7th rounder. That deal is highway robbery. Sorry, Welker is a nice player but he's not worth to go Dan Synder over.

It's a good deal because the Pats will now get him for the tendered deal. What was that? 1.3 mill? Great deal for a guy that may emerge as a key WR in the future.

Too bad for Welker, so close to the big payday.

Well you know what they say about Nice Guys.

We might get the 7th back if Banta-Cain ever signs with someone...

I would hope this has to mean the Pats have a deal worked out with Welker he's ready to sign, not that we are just trading for his rights.

Here's the breakdown...from Peter King and it is a done deal.

There is no way the Pats were gonna pay Wes 6 mill a year, no matter what was being reproted. The Pats asked the fins to sign Wes to 1.3 Mil contract, then trade him. Wes will get somehwere near 3.9 a year and in return for signing him to the 1.3 tender amount the Pats will trade their 2nd and 7th in the process.
