Just heard on EEI that Briggs wants Chicago to remove tag and allow him to go into FA. Maybe he'll rethink not wanting to play here?;)

Could we really afford Briggs? I dont know much about how much money hes wanting, but it sounds like he wants alot.

Can't afford him, he hates the 3-4, and he's *****ing about a contract already. We're not getting him.

Wouldn't mind finding out if we could fit him. He's good and still relatively young, I think.

yes you are correct. nobody would disagree with you, but those are not the points why he will not come here.

I believe after the signing of A.T we should get some youth in this position.some rookie/younger LB in rotation.

Instead of lance spend a high pick and mid pick on 2 LB and put them in rotation ...better for us.

True.. I guess first and formost, he doesn't want to play in a 3-4 defense.

imo first and formost we cannot afford him. we have an estimated 8-12 mil of cap space left. we want to see asante resigned. i have no idea what that will cost above the 7.79 mil fanchise tag. we need to keep 5 mil open for draft picks. what about a few vets like Seau? how much will Welker get in year 1-6? my thought it is low, but we still need to keep $ open for him (1.5-3 mil???)

And as my wife says, people in Hell want ice water.

Why would Chicago ever remove the tag and allow him to go free agency?

Linebackers take more time to mature than virtually any other position.

I think we should use draft choices on players who can have a major impact during their first 4-5 years.

I for one am all for bringing seau back. Before he had that freak injury, our defense was a completely different unit. I loved his intensity and backfield penetration. He is slow, like Bruschi, and that would hamper us when attempting to cover TE's, but that what AD is for. Bring seau back, keep him in rotation with Bru. Bring in a young, under the radar LB and draft a rookie. Thats what I would like to see happen.

Fair enough, however, I don't know exactly what our cap space is after these deals. Until all details are know, I can't say for sure we can't afford the cap hit.

meet the Master. http://www.patscap.com/ "14.5 million. My numbers do NOT include the cap effects of the Heath Evans re-signing or the Sammy Morris signing."

I totally agree. Seau had fun playing football here. It should take about 1-1.5 mil to sign him. I hope we use a #1 pick on an ILB. Willis, Pos, Harris, Timmons

Danny Clark is a free agent, and he'll come cheaper than Briggs....both in salary demands, and in trade compensation (0).

Lance is 26 years old.

If they follow your advice, that will put a lot of stress not only on the linebacking corps, but on the secondary as well. There's a reason why the Pats like to plug in vets at that position rather than draft 'em and give 'em baptism by fire. It's an expensive proposition in that, while they will learn, they will learn by mistakes, which is what happens to most youngsters you do that with. The expensive part comes when those mistakes translate into loses.

Unlike some of the other positions on defense, linebacker in this system takes quite a while to learn, let alone master. Doubt me? Ask Chad Brown, Monte Biesel or Ryan Claridge.

Just like you don't have raw rookies at the helm of the QE2, you don't have raw rookies calling the shots over the center.

The cap hit for Asante will GO DOWN if he is resigned.
The rookie class will cost much closer to 2mill than 5mill.

Thanks. As AJ has stated, the cap hit could go down with Asante signing a long term deal, or, there is a possibility that he gets traded and 8 million gets freed up.

what about
1)Him not wanting to play in 3-4
2)Is he worth the huge contract + 1st round pick
3)This is encourage asante to strike too

Is there any word on Briggs if he has changed his stance on playing the 3-4?
