so, it looks like we are gonna go into the draft without any true holes on our roster

holes before any signings:
number two rb...signed sammy morris
top three wr...are prob gettin wes welker
top three olb...got ADALIUS!!!
number three blocking te...got kyle brady
top four corner...nobody yet
two top three ilb...nobody yet
top four safety...nobody yet

so the only "holes" we have now are really more of depth questions (other than ilb)
however we could move vrabel back inside on more of a permanent basis, and have pierre woods as the third olb
so, we are def setting ourselves up where we can just get the best players avail in the draft and guys that fit our system, no worries of filling pressing needs

We need to draft a LB or two to groom for when tedy leaves next year

If young players are to contribute when we need them, some have to be groomed this year.

I make our needs:

OL, TE, QB, RB, K, LS, P, DE -- nothing for now, although one never knows where they'll decide to push competition

CB -- 1-2 developmental, depending on whether Samuel is locked up long-term.

S -- 1 developmental young STUD. The urgency depends on whether or not they think they'll retain Wilson after this year (I'm guessing no).

LB -- everybody differs as to how many we need

Nice summary, but you seem to have forgotten that pesky WR position....

Oh yeah -- that little detail ...

Actually, we have 4 young WRs (counting Welker) plus a couple of guys trying to get beyond the PS. I don't know that we'll draft a WR unless a speed-burner prospect is BPA at the right time. That's really the only thing we're short on now.

I don't know that speed-burner alone fits into BB's philosophy if they can't cut, accelerate, and run good routes. I see some fast WRs, what I don't see are a lot of quick twitch change of direction types who can get back up to speed quickly.

i agree
although i wouldnt mind a project number two rb

as for linebacker i think we need at least one this yr
its all what we do within the next couple
we need at three first day lbers in the next two yrs i believe

The Pats can't ignore the wide receiver position completely because

Caldwell and Gaffney have contracts that expire after the 2007 season.

Perhaps day #2 of the draft.

Something the Bears GM said that I found very interesting, I believe the Patriots follow a similar model. He stated (paraphrase) "We try to have most of roster in place before the draft, this allows us to add the BPA and develop depth throughou the roster."

Make a lot of sense, I think all of our starters are in place. We are wet paper thin at ILB but I like the approach described above except I would change BPA to best player / best fit.

Assumptions
- if no one else is brought in Vrabel would start at ILB
- assumes Samuel plays in 07
