Does anyone see the signing of Andre Carter as an indication that Armond Armstead will not be ready to take the field in 2013? It is very likely I am reading to much into things and the 2 are not at all connected, that said Armstead could have returned to full practice and I haven't heard anything other than him working on rehab activities off to the side.

I see Carter playing the 3 technique defensive tackle in sub packages to allow Chandler Jones to remain at right defensive end in lieu of Michael Buchanan, that is the same role I was expecting Armstead to play at least initially.

I would be disappointed if we didn't see Armstead at all in 2013 he was one of the players I most looked forward to watching, so I am very hopeful that I am simply overthinking the Carter signing; thoughts?

I would say randomly needing surgery for an infection not related to another recent surgery is a very serious matter indeed. My expectations of him playing this year were close to nil when I heard that.

I think it's going to be the other way around, with Jones at DT and Carter on the edge in sub packages. Jones is bigger and heavier than Carter and I don't think Carter has ever played in the inside like that.

Not really, the signing could be that Kelly is going to be out longer than expected. Also maybe they didn't like the DE play by the bottom of the roster. Or a combination of the above and what you mentioned.

I could be mistaken put I thought they used Carter at that spot quite a bit in the second half of 2011 before he suffered the injury against Denver. I agree Jones is bigger and stronger but my thought is he is also more explosive which would play better off the edge, I am curious to see how much explosion Carter has left at 34.years old, which is why I thought him working inside against a less athletic guard where he could still have an athletic advantage would be a better fit.

They want Carter to spell Jones, as the other guys aren't doing it well enough. Especially when setting the edge against the run.

I don't expect Armstead to be much of a factor, if any at all, this season. It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't play a snap on defense.

Hopefully all the guys coming back in the next few weeks, Kelly, Armstead and Vereen, will provide a tremendous boost for the team. Add in Carter, and it gives the team a lot of flexibility. I am assuming Armstead will play this season.

Could be right about the defensive end depth after starting off well Michael Buchanan has not played as well in recent weeks. A lot of it has to do with Wilfork not being out there since the injury Chandler Jones and Buchanan has actually been seeing double teams and Buchanan isn't ready for type of matchup at this juncture of in his career anyway.

I think Andre Carter is good, but also he is very hot.

Don't think it means much at all. Carter a DE, Armstead is a DT. Different positions. If anything I think the Carter signing means he takes Ninkovich's positIon on the line, as ninko goes back to LB. But that's just my opinion

I just want to see Bequette play an entire game. It's to the point where I don't even care if he sucks. I really want to see players drafted relatively high on the field. Boyce and now Bequette are going to ride the bench in favor of vets(collie and carter).

Repeat after me - Andre Carter has never played inside or at 3-tech in his career.

Two different positions. I don't see the coorelation. The guy they signed last night would be more of an indication that Armstead won't stay, but I think that is a stretch too.

I can do it but I'd be wrong just like you:

"Carter hasn’t hit the quarterback in the last two games, which was surprising on the heels of a three-game stretch when he recorded 14 quarterback hits. The Patriots’ defensive scheme was different against the Colts, though, as Carter was assigned to play more 3-technique — lining up between the guard and tackle and attacking through the B-gap — than at any other point in the season. It helped free up other rushers, like defensive tackle*Kyle Love*to the inside and safetyJames Ihedigbo*on the outside, and Carter knew it was also a positive tool to counter Indianapolis’ running game."

He's on the PS, so it doesn't mean much.

Well if they suck they are gonna ride the bench and they SHOULD be riding the bench. I'd rather see the better player play. If Bequette were lighting it up in practice I assure you he wouldn't be riding the bench! Logan Ryan was out there because he showed something in practice (and then in the game), NOT because of his draft position!

Hopefully Carter can rekindle that magic he found us the first time in New England. I don't expect him to be as explosive as before but we need all the help we can get on the DL right now.

BOTTOM LINE

The addition of Carter has little to do with the possible addition of Armstead. Forston is on the roster as the #4 DT. Armstead would replace Forston in that role if he were to be added to the roster.

ARMSTEAD

A) With Wilfork out for the season and Kelly out, Armstead might get reps inside if he is ready to play.

B) Chris Jones and Vellano are the starters for now. When Kelly is back, this will be a fine 3-man rotation.

C) To me, Armstead would be an emergency player replacing Forston (in Forston's role as #4 DT), if he is added, which seems somehow doubtful.

==============
CARTER

1) Carter could play inside at a position that he doesn't play.

2) Carter could get reps instead of Buchanan.

3) Carter could take DE reps from Ninkovich who is needed at LB. This would mean that Collins )and Fletcher) would not get major reps that one might expect with Mayo out.

MY GUESS - DOOR NUMBER THREE
===============

I think this is depth at DE because Ninkovich is banged up. As others have pointed out Forston is the one currently occupying the spot Armstead would be taking.

Armstead plays inside at DT.....at 300 lbs...
Carter at a much lighter 260 is a DE...mostly a sub rusher, or rotational player with Nink and jones...
