According to Adam Schefter on the NFL Network,if the Dolphins had just tendered Welker for 1.8m instead of 1.3m(diff.of 500000).Then ,it would have cost a team a #1 to sign him.

Seems a little shortsighted by Miami,just a 500K bump.Maybe the second round draft choice is what they want.......just seems strange,if you want to keep him.....tender him at 1.8m

If there's any chance that they'll match a contract at over $3 million/year, it's idiotic not to have tendered him at a higher level.

If Gay is healthy and Mangini likes him as a player, it is likely a better way to spend a #2 than some college player.

Much like Welker. It's a low ceiling, low floor move. There will be higher upside guys available with our #2 pick . . . but they'll have much more downside and risk too. Welker is guaranteed to help the team, barring injury. If Mangini feels that way about Gay he may do it.

Apples and oranges. If you asked the Dolphins a week ago, they would have told you Welker was their #3 WR, PR, and KR and a guy they were counting on in 2007. It will create multiple holes in their roster. The Pats would have told you they aren't sure what Gay's role is on the team.

Personally if the Pats get a #2 from the Jets or anyone for signing Gay I'll be thrilled that they got a #2 pick for a guy who hasn't played in 2 years, that no one is counting on to play a big role next year, and who in reality is probably going to be in a training camp fight to make the roster.

Losing Gay for a second is a deal, considering that we was an undrafted free agent and didn't play at all last season. If they put a first round tender on him, then there is no way any team is interested him (much like no team would had been interested in Welker). Gay is good and I think the secondary will be much better with him than a draftee at this point, but I'll take a second round pick to risk it.

No, because giving Gay the 1.3 was a way of warding off potential suitors b/c he isn't on Welker's level by any stretch and won't command interest if it means giving up a #2. The Dolphins should've had the foresight to know Welker would be on team's radar if the price was a #2.

The difference is that I wouldn't mind losing Gay for a second. AS was said, he creates no holes by leaving, except on the IR.

"A team source told ESPN.com on Saturday that the Patriots plan to sign Miami wide receiver Wes Welker, a three-year veteran and an explosive all-around performer, to a restricted free agent offer sheet in an attempt to pirate him away from the Dolphins."

Which is the same thing everyone else has.

The 'fins are dumb eh? What do we know about Cameron's WRs in San Diego? Any smurfs? Parker was 6', McCardell 6'1", Jackson 6'5", and Gates is 6'5". Welker is a 5'9" smurf, not too many teams like them and I don't think Cam is one of them. He cut his dink & dunk QB and is going with his jump ball QB. This year's draft has 6'4" WRs Jarret and Rice, 6'6" TE Olsen (Cam is reportedly shopping McMichael) as well as 6'2" WRs Bowe and Meachem likely to go in rounds 1 & 2, seems like Cam may try for one of them to play jump ball with Culpepper. Putting the 2nd round tag on Welker means teams who are interested can get him at a reasonable price, and Cam gets an extra 2nd to work with for his rebuilding. The 'fins are not dumb, no matter how they smell after they've beached themselves.
