Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey restructured his contract, turning some salary into signing bonus. The move saved Denver about $3.5 million in cap room.

"Champ wants a ring and he wanted to help the team," said his agent, Jack Reale. "Anything Champ can do, he'll do."

Despite reports San Francisco signed cornerback Nate Clements to an eight- year contract worth $80 million, the deal actually averages $8 million a year.

Bailey remains the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL with a $9 million-a-year average.

Not sure he gave it back.. just converted some (or most of it) from yearly salary to a bonus. So, instead of waiting and earning 3.5 million as part of his salary for the year, he get's a fat check of 2.5 mill (guess here) now. Not a bad trade off.

Yeah, restructuring is always a good deal for the player and the team is simply pushing the cap hits out further.

Since salary is not guaranteed in the NFL and SB money is, this is a no brainer for the player. Take some risky salary money and convert it to a SB so the team can do some bookwork to gain cap room.

It always makes me laugh when they come on saying they are team players when they get their money up front without any injury risk to them. Tell it like it is please.

This must be Champ's version of a save Daniel Graham from the Raiders campaign. Saw Champ on TV the other night talking about the impact of signing a player like Dan with rings. Then I saw Clayton's updated cap figures that had the Broncos sitting at $2.2M under the cap and I figured the Dan signing might be about to hit a little financial snag.

As for the restructure, he doesn't loose a nickle. Occasionally players actually give back money or agree to incentivize it. But mostly they do what Champ did - allow the team to convert salary to signing bonus so it can be prorated on the cap books. He now just gets it sooner and in a lump sum as opposed to doled out in 1/16ths over the course of a season. And depending on the player and how you look at it and him, it either increases his chances of being cut down the road because of his increased cap cost vs. savings or decreases them because of the increased dead cap.

what a saint. I offered to take my whole salary for the year up front as a bonus but my boss didn't go for it. Obviously he has no idea the lengths I'd go to to sacrifice for the company.

Looks like Denver could be vying to make their move in 2007. It's still early to say, but it looks like New England and Denver will be the class in the AFC next year.

I disagree. From the perspective of right now, the triumvirate still rules (NE, Indy, SD,) until proven otherwise. The Colts' core is intact. So is the Chargers', minus coaching staff. We can posture about how the loss of the staff in SD will cripple the team, but until we see that happen, we know the talent the players possess. I would call it possible but not a lock that they lose a few more games, but by the time the playoffs roll around (you really think they sit out?) they could jell quite nicely, thank you very much.

As for Denver, they're only really scary to us. Having a couple of really good corners is a great piece of the puzzle. But you really think they're the "class of the league" at QB? RB? Season record/playoff record? Linebacker?

I think they're good but don't put them in the elite.

good post, i don't see all the love for denver, the cb they got is the same height as the one they lost and he's afraid to tackle.

they have some talent but that defense needs work cause they got worked in the 2nd half of the 06 season.

I think that if Seau wants to still play, he might well stay at home and play for the Bolts; they need him a LOT MORE than we do...

Now add a new coaching staff, to add to the disorganization and here is a Team thats ready to take a big step backwards.
