How is Chandler Jones only credited 1 sack vs. Saints?

He had a sack on Brees a couple plays before the Arrington INT.

He had another sack on 3rd down late in the game when Brees tried to roll out. Brees was behind the LOS if I remember correctly.



Yet he was only credited with 1 sack. Am I missing something here? I didn't watch the game live but I caught the Replay on NFLN and found this odd.

Looking at Pro Football Reference, seems that's exactly what happened:

4 2:00 3 7 NOR 33 Drew Brees left end for -5 yards (tackle by Chandler Jones)

In the end it's not that important because Jones has been doing a great job creating consistent pressure. With Wilfork and Mayo gone, he's easily the defense's third best player after Talib and McCourty.

It was 5 yards behind the LOS, thats why I thought it would count as a sack.

Brees still could've thrown the ball.

Perhaps since it was obvious Brees was not going to throw the ball at the time when Jones tackled him and he was outside the pocket, they recorded it as a negative rushing play rather than a sack. It's all subjective, but I can see the logic behind that.

Yeah that is really strange. I always thought it was if the quarterback was tackled behind the LOS that it counts as a sack. Does it change if it appears that the quarterback is trying to run it? If so does it change depending on the interpretation of the quarterbacks intent? If so who interprets that?

It was a clear roll out pass play with an option of Brees keeping it and running. Meachem was the intended target but was covered by Dennard when Brees looked his way and then he saw Jones coming and continued running.

Even NFL.com thought it was a sack.

I am surprised they haven't corrected it. I thought I was crazy when I say that he was only credited with one sack when I could have sworn he had two. I can't remember the last time a player tackled a QB behind the LOS and not been credited with a sack. In fact, I can't remember any time it happened.

If it's an obvious run play - a draw or read option, for instance - and the QB is tackled behind the LOS, it's generally credited as a run play and not as a sack, but I agree that this was a bit odd. I would have awarded a sack on that play since it was called as a pass play with a clear instruction that a sack is better than an incompletion because the latter would stop the clock, but it's subjective.

Whatever it winds up being, it was a great play by Jones at a very crucial moment. I think Brees easily gets a first down if Jones doesn't make that play, Jones was the only guy there. He's on pace for 12 sacks, I'd be very happy with that.

Yeah I don't think Jones cares much whether it was called a sack or not. They got a huge stop at a key moment in the game. Jones has been terrific all year as a pass rusher. He has a big test with Ferguson up next - would be great for him to find a way to get at Geno from behind once or twice.

I think it's unfortunate that he didn't get credit for the sack.

While we think players don't care about stats, we all know they do. David Ortiz seems like a nice guy who probably wouldn't care about stats, but do you remember the tirade when he felt he was robbed an RBI (coded an error or something)?

Or how about anytime a player interecepts a ball on fourth down? It's because they care about stats.

Remember when Corey Dillon begged to get an extra carry in a blow out win against the Browns so he could go over 100 yards?

dont make a big fuss about this, if Jones keeps getting sacks that are not recorded, his price tag drops later on in the future...while his play remains the same
