First of all, we must ask the following question: What is Ron Borges job..? Is it to write intelligent, insightful and well-thought out opinions..? No. Anyone that thinks that is his job does is badly mistaken. His job is to help sell newspapers for his employer and generate traffic for his employers' website (either boston.com or msnbc.com). He wants to make as big a name for himself that he can, ensuring that people are (A)reading his column and (B)talking about him.

So how does Borges ensure (A) and (B)..? He does this by going out and deliberately getting everyone all riled up. The more people talk about him - even negative comments like how stupid he is or what an idiot he is - the better he is doing his job.

Think about it: Who is the #1 writer in town everyone is talking about this morning...? Is it Mike Reiss..? Bob Ryan...? Sean McAdam..? No. Everyone's talking about what an jerk Ron Borges is. People are posting links to his Boston Globe article as well as links to his MSNBC article. And here's a little secret: In his profession, it is better for everyone to be talking about what an idiot you are than for no one to be talking about you at all. Every time you post a link to a Borges article, you give him exactly what he wants.

Now if you're the type of person that enjoys getting all riled up, then have at it and enjoy. I am the first to admit that Dan Shaugnessey is the type of columnist I "love to hate." But if you're someone that really dislikes Ron Borges and you really want to stick to him, then the best solution is to ignore him. Actually, I disagree to an extent. Tell me how many people "ran out and bought" a Globe b/c they heard about Borges' stupid column today? I bet none. How many people went onto the website that wouldn't have found their way there eventually today (not including MSNBC)? Maybe a few, but not that many incremental users i would guess. So then his job is even more sad. He writes tripe to suit his own ego, but it doesn't sell any additional papers.

You mean like Micheal Smith or Tom Curran? Cause those guys never got anywhere in New England by just being good at what they do.

Borges isn't even entertaining any more. Like an old episode of the WWE.

He's the Globe's Howard Beale (remember the movie Network?) ranting into the night against his personal demons while they suck the last drip of readership they can get before they die. They can't fire him now because it be too embarrassing to admit it.

If the Globe at least had other football coverage, they could maybe get away with it. I can only hope Mike Reiss does his time and moves out and up the way the other good ones did.

Borges is great at both. He is also a terrific wordsmith, in the areas of writing style, prose and vocabulary. My only problem with him is that he loses a lot of objectivity and respect because of his personal disdain for Belichick. This disdain clouds his writing and makes him someone you cannot always believe in or take seriously.

So I agree, with all of this ranting we post here, we are only doing what he and the Globe want us to do. Ditto for Dan Shaughnessy, Gerry Callahan, Jim Donaldson, and all writers of their ilk.

If you could have seen this guy on one of the first 4 Downs with Felger shows(FSNE), you would have seen that there is NOT a objective bone in his body when it comes to BB or the Patriots.

The others that you have mentioned are trying to draw attention to themselves and sell papers. With Borges, it's a blood fued. I've never seen the look of hate in a " sports journalist" eyes as I saw on that show.

This is wrong. Borges really believes he is right and also feels justified -- whatever the true reason is -- for disparaging BB. I've exchanged multiple e-mails with him in the past and to me, this is clear. His venomous writing has done more harm than good to the Globe as far as people who care about reading football are concerned. Newspaper revenue is from display advertising, and the only way you can see it is to buy the print version. Exposure to advertising in the online articles is minimal, by comparison. The tradeoff is that you often don't get the full print version in the online articles. I am one of many who no longer buys the newspaper and who only seldom reads Borges now online, focusing mostly on Reiss's stuff.

This notion that negativity/controversy creates a stronger following is bogus, in my opinion. What do you think is more indicative of what a football fan looks for: someone who has great inside sources and writes fair and balanced articles, or a derisive hack with a personal agenda? If the Globe still had a great football insider a la the late Will McDonough, who I always would read, I'd be more likely to buy/read the paper regularly. I read the Globe MUCH LESS now specifically because of Borges and what I perceive to be an anti-Patriots bias as part of their general editorial philosophy. Nothing beats great coverage of a team, and I'm not saying it all has to be "positive" or praiseworthy of BB, etc. I'm talking insightful, thorough, fair and balanced coverage, and the Globe clearly lags behind the Herald and ProJo in that regard.

Who among us would rather read Borges/Globe coverage of the Pats than coverage by the Herald or Providence Journal? I always read the latter two first because they provide the best coverage. Borges is neither incisive nor trustworthy. Vern has it right as far as what/who provides the best info and gets people reading. Whenever I see people up in arms about Borges' latest Patriots slam-down, I'm more likely to chalk it up to Borges just being the ass that he is and move on rather than scurry around for the Globe or jump online to read it for myself.
