Schefter reported that we signed Welker to an offer sheet a while ago, yet Reiss has said nothing about it in is blog.

What's going on Mike?

I think Reiss is waiting for something more or less official, or at least from one of his own sources.

He was the first one today to mention the Pats wanting to sign Welker.

schefter has only said we plan to make an offer sheet. Reiss usually waits for things to be more certain than plan thats why we all take his word as gospel.

According to PFT Schefter said it has already happened.

reread the pft it says planned in the body of the text despite the headline saying signed.

You sir are correct. I guess I missed it.

I posed this question earlier, because I was a little confused. I mean, it is Schefter, who everyone keeps telling me is reliable, but why isnt it being reported anywhere else??

I have been waiting for even a second source. Tomase picked it up but he is going on schefters rumor. I am hoping it is just that the RFA process takes longer and not that it is a false rumor.

John Clayton reported that the Pats are planning to sign Welker as well. I've rarely seen Clayton say something like that and have it not pan out.

I don't understand why it is always "plan" to sign him to the offer sheet. Does it have to wait until Monday or some such thing?

PATS SIGN WELKER TO OFFER SHEET

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Patriots plan to sign receiver Wes Welker, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet. The deal would be for six years, and would have a value of $38.5 million.

Though we can find no reports on this, our guess
is that the contract offer will contain a poison pill provision that makes it fully guaranteed under circumstances that would apply if Miami matches, but not if Welker moves to New England.

Hey, some folks around the league might not like it, but the poison pill is the law of the land until the NFL and the NFL Players Association agree to language that takes it out of the CBA. So while on one hand it might be regarded by some in the league as "dirty" to use the poison pill, the fact of the matter is that you either do what you can to be competitive, or your ass gets fired.

The Pftrumormill has absolutely zero credibility.

You might as well get your news from the Enquirer.

you might be on to something saying that it has to wait til monday as it might have to go thru the league office

PFT uses this schefter story as their source but yes I agree PFT is a place to get rumors and I suggest everyone who goes there to wait for better sources before getting excited about what is there. I also suggest that if something says plan that you temper your enthusiasm as well.

I would think somebody leaked this information. This is actually a rumor, since it hasn't happened.

Much of the stuff in the rumormill isn't even that, it's some guy thinking up sensational scenarios to get clicks for their website.

The difference is Tomase and Reiss are supposed to be responsible news sources. They have to be careful what they say. If they kept writing headlines that were lies like that, they would get fired.

Sorry not exactly sure what your point is???

I said PFT is for rumors

I said PFT is for rumors

My point is, this is a rumor. It hasn't happened yet, but it seems there are reliable sources with information that it probably will.

Say I'm PFT guy. I watch a game and Cleveland's receivers stink. I write a headline,
Moss headed to Cleveland?

That's not a rumor, because I just made it up. There are no sources from Oakland or Cleveland. It's what you call BS.

When you write a headline saying Patriots sign Welker, then you quote your source saying they haven't, (plan to), your headline is a lie.

You know what a lie is, no?

oh ok I can agree with that. as far as rumors go this one seems more reliable than most. I am already getting excited about welker but a word like plan tempers my enthusiasm.

PFT was really strange the way they reported the Tomase article that said Thomas to the Pats was a done deal. They said it had an "uneasy" quality to it (WTF does that mean?) and it was like they didn't get that Tomase was putting his entire career on the line if he was definitively saying the Pats had landed him when they in fact had not. It's like they report so much crap, but this you question?

Give the stinkin report don't try to turn into Freud and analyze the emotions behind it.

THOMAS DEAL COMING?

John Tomase of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have struck a "preliminary deal" with free-agent linebacker Adalius Thomas.

But we sense a certain uneasy quality about the report, and it lacks the same unequivocal feel that most reports of player signings possess. If that makes any sense.

We're not saying it won't happen. But, for now, we're not completely convinced that it will.

How is this worthy of publication?

PFT guy has a bad burrito. He feels queasy, but also doesn't understand what it meant to work for a responsible news source.

Tomase and Reiss can't say it's done intil it's worked out and the physical is passed!
