Well I knew we were probably going to lose Welker, but I really didn't want him to go to New England. Wes has a heart the size of a bus and plays a lot better than his talent has given him. He isn't the fastest player, or the strongest, but he will hang on to the ball over the middle on 3rd down. He's a great 3rd option for any QB to throw to and can excell in the short passing game. He struggles to get down the field or free of the end, but in the slot coming over the middle, he's awesome.

As for his return game, he never takes it to the house. But you will consistantly have the ball around the 30 yard line on kickoffs and he can consistantly get you 5-10 yards on the punt returns. He is solid at best when it comes to returning, but should help you guys in that area.

All and all, he will be a big help to the Patriots. It will kill me to see him in a New England uniform, but I just thought I'd let you guys know what you were getting. I don't expect Miami to match the offer sheet. We are looking for more of a burner in the #3 WR hole and could also use the pick.

You guys now have one of my favorite Dolphins, but it is time for Wes to go. Congrats on signing a good player and a great person.

Thanks for the info. We are happy to get him! Everything about the guy screams "Patriots player." It hurts to lose the 2nd rounder, but I think its a good move and actually works out pretty well for both teams involved.

Thanks for the analysis, Aqua4Ever.
It wasn't easy for you to post that where
so many members have barked at you.

You can tell from numerous threads here the past few weeks
that Wes is perhaps THE fav Phin of many of us, too.

Pats fans are all pretty high now ...
but i hope we won't gloat at you.

Because he's so young, it doesn't bother me to lose the 2nd round pick, especially since it's at the end of the round.

Welker will come in (if Miami doesn't match obviously) and instantly contribute. We could only hope a draft pick contributed, though there might be more upside.

Welker is good player and more of a possession receiver. Anyone who says he is game breaker is way off, at least at this point.

Thanks man, what do you think of the Thomas signing? Are you worried about losing McMichael?

I think he's a game breaker in the sense that you can always rely on him to go after (and usually come up with) the tough catch. Also, he is pretty good at running after the catch.

armageddon is upon us. a reasonable post from a fish and colt fan. where are the gas masks and canned perishables.

He sounds ideal for the Pats-thank you for that info.

Thanks for the insight Aqua. Now a question for you.

Is Cam going to get an offense so the Fins Defense can stay off the field for more than 2 minutes?:p
You'd think he'd just leave the defense as is and stay on the offensive side of the ball.
You'd think letting a guy like Welker go would hurt that building process. Gotta draft a new reciever to learn a new system.
Gotta find out if C-pepper is the answer. Or do you mold Lemon?

What are your AFC East thoughts?

I heard the following stats referenced on WEEI this afternoon. Perhaps it's just a matter of time before he starts being more of a threat on the pro level, but from the looks of it, he did pretty darn well "taking it to the house" in college:

He also scored 8 touchdowns returning punts in his career, still tied for the NCAA record.

Do you think 2nd round pick is too high for Welker or do you think it's fair?

Thanks for the friendly post, Aqua. From your description he sounds like a young Troy Brown. And that is not a bad thing, no sir, not at all.

No problem guys. Dang, I would have to make too many quotes to post in one, so I’m just going to address each of you personally.

Salty, you hit it pretty much on the head. Wes really does fit the mold of a true “New England Patriot.” He is tough nosed, hard working and an over achiever. I too agree it works out best for both teams because we really need a burner in our WR corps plus we need as many picks as we can get.

Physcopat, I too hope I can get through this thread without anyone mouthing off, but if so, oh well. I do come here quite a bit and you’re right, he seems to becoming a fan favorite in New England already. There was not a Dolphins fan who didn’t LOVE Wes Welker.

Mavfan, let me just say that I am ticked about you guys signing Thomas. He is a game breaker and in my opinion has over taken Ray Lewis in terms of who was the best linebacker on that Ravens team. Thomas is a great signing for you guys and with us needing an OLB, I’m pretty upset about that. I hope we can get Joey Porter or Donnie Edwards. I don’t think McMichael is going any where. He is still one of the top 10 TEs IMO and I don’t see him leaving. Although not nearly as talented, he’s kind of like Antonio Gates and I think Cam will love using him that way.

Jman, thanks for asking. This is why I joined this board was to have these type of discussions. I think with the talent Miami had last year, they vastly underachieved. It also was a big blow throwing Harrington out there as he was absolutely horrid. Our biggest needs on offense are left guard and left tackle. If we can improve that part of the line, and get a healthy Culpepper, I think we will be fine. If Quinn falls to us, I think we have to take him in the draft; there are so many options at QB that I have no idea what I want any more. As for the defense, we need to upgrade our corner back spot and that’s about all for now on D. So look for the Fins to grab a LT, LG, OLB and a corner.

Redcell, yes Welker was great at returning in college, but has no TDs in the NFL. He’s just not fast enough to make that big play in the NFL.

Zippo, I’m pretty happy about getting a 2nd rounder for Welker. I thought he needed to go any how and if we can get anything for him, that’s great. Like I said earlier, great deal for both teams.

Promiseland, no problem man. You guys got yourselves a fine young WR.

I'm just catching up with things but that was my assessment as well - we just signed someone to replace Troy Brown (hopefully Troy still plays another season)

I'm still waiting for a move to grab a deep field threat but this is a good "veteran depth" move. Having someone like him on the field, while it won't stretch the field much, does take some coverage off of Watson, Caldwell and Gaffney, helping them gain a few yards after the catch.

Welker is going to become an instant fan favorite in New England.

I dunno which jersey to buy... AT, or WW. I might have to just get both of them...

I hope it's just a matter of finding the right holes to get through. Hey, here's one way to look at it... Devin Hester *only* had 6 kick returns for touchdowns in college! How's that for spin? LOL! :D

Cheers!
