This is why I think the play for Welker is a terrific move by BB/Pioli:

1.)The Pats co-opted the market for Welker by making an offer sheet this EARLY.......Miami wants a
2nd rd pick.......but it's not the Pats' end of the round pick.I believe that the Dolphins would have gotten a earlier pick for Welker,if the Pats hadn't beaten other teams to the punch.

2.)Welker's only 25 yrs old......How many draft choices this year are in the 23-25 yrs old catergory,
I'll bet most of them.

3.)Welker caught 67 passes from......Manning?
Brady?.......Carson Palmer?......No,from Culpepper/Harrington......He's only going to get BETTER with a great QB.

4.)Everyone loves draft choices,myself included,
however...there is NO WAY,BB is going to use 10-13 draft choices and pay all that money to rookies. We now have new free agents, promising players coming off injury, etc, etc.
People don't realize that the Patriots are actually a
"young" team......not an "old" one......look at the ages of our OL and DL.
If anything,BB is looking to trade draft choices into next year or the year after.

6.)There is a "poison pill",here,....BB is forcing the
Dolphins to deal with the Pats and only the Pats.
Negating any trade possibilities from another team.Don't forget Miami could have packaged Welker as part of a larger deal...not just a 2nd rounder.
If you had heard that Bill Polian had done the same thing, with Welker replacing Stokely, giving up the 64th pick in the Draft.....What would you have said?
Holy sh-t!......I believe would have been the optimive phrase.

How BB/Pioli have put this all together,so fast,is amazing to me....They must have a Cray Supercomputer in the basement of Foxboro stadium.

To paraphrase....."veni,vedi,vici"....They came..
They saw...They conquered.

Great post. They went into planning mode on the planeride back from Indy.

Can only 1 team do an offer sheet to Welker?

Looks like Belioli have Cam Cameron and Huzienga bent over a fuggin desk tonight. And I love it.

Yes.....the dolphins have 7 days to either match the Pats offer or agree to accept our 2nd round pick.
No other team can be involved during this 7 day period.

I'll agree that, having landed Thomas, we don't need a lot of high picks.

I'd rather have a proven young receiver also, we already have Jackson to break in since he hasn't made his mark.

You can argue the merits of different receivers, (I won't), but it's kind of silly. Don't you think Piolichick know who they want?

2 vets filling big roles. 2 vet role players filling vacancies.

Do we now have 5 first day picks, or 4?

1,1,3,4,4?

Spot-on analysis :rocker: The Pats just forced Meeamee into a corner, setting themselves up as the only game in town. Agreed on the speed of these signings, too, both from the Pats and how quickly these FA's are signing on our dotted line. :D I love it when a plan comes together.

The Dolphins are getting a second round pick, it's not like the Pats pulled a fast one here. Both teams I think will end up being happy (and I want to see how much money Welker is actually getting from the Pats).

BRADY GOES FIRST! :violent:

They've been laying these plans since the minute the Indy game ended. :D

The exact reason being that
Welker may only SIGN one offer sheet.

Disagree, dude -- the PAts pulled a fast one here. Welker was probably their most valuable reciever...a young Wayne Chrebet.

I like him a lot too, and I think he'll be really good for the Pats, we'll see just how good he ends up being. Believe me I would love for the Pats to have hosed Miami, but I don't think they did.
