Did we just use the poison pill?

So because Welker's younger we're giving up a second for him? Doesn't make sense to me.

Remember who has been throwing to Welker, they like him because he fills multiple needs. He runs good short inside routes, and we need that.

Not only would the money be absurd, I also think it's silly to give a 2nd round pick to Miami for Welker, considering the WR position is pretty deep this year in the draft. There are likely going to be several WRs at around our 2nd round pick who should be just as good as Welker, for much less money, and without letting a divisional rival have another day 1 pick. That would be just absurd. I really hope that's not true.

Are you numbskulls insinuating you know more about these players and the market and draft pick value than Belioli?

Welker is a self motivated, hard nosed Belichick type football player. And quite a replacement for a potentially retiring smurf. Ever wonder why Stallworth is available again? Want to draft another Fla WR in the second round and see how long it takes him to assimilate an NFL offense, barring injury? Want to lay odds on which one blows a knee first returning kicks - our feature RB or our only starting CB under contract and guaranteed to show for TC?

The poison pill was probably pretty easy like he has to be the highest paid WR on the roster when signed....

let's put it this way. A 2nd round pick can only be signed for 4 years, and is a risk. Let's say its 50/50 whether the pick pans out. Wes just signed for say, 5 years, and we know what we are getting.

no I don't think we are actually paying that. There are phony years in there, and there is a clause in there that says if the Dolphins match, those phony years become guaranteed.

Count on a reasonable first 3/4 years with the last few years absurd, and a clause that states something stupid like if he plays in at least 4 home games in Miami, the whole contract is guaranteed. Miami cant match it, so the Pats get him, they get a #2 draft choice, and he gets a 3 year deal with restructuring on the horizon.

Welker is a perfect Pats WR. Quick separation, tough in tight coverage in the middle, durable, good with YAC, runs very clean routes, good hands good punt returner. Think: a cross between pee-on and Troy Brown. And 25. Thats one hell of a second round draft choice.

Action Jackson :)D ) is gonna be back this year. For those of you who want a fast tall WR to stretch the field and clear the intermediate zones, he's it. For those of you who actually still labor under the delusion that one of those field stretchers will actually ever be a #1 in our system, I pity you. There will never be peace in your mind until BB and Brady are retired......

I can assume you have NEVER EVER disagreed with a move made by Scott B.?

I don't think anyone is saying that. I think people are hoping this isn't a Starks fiasco. 2nd rounder, hmmmmmmmmmm.

my favorite post of the day. :D

we are numbskulls.com after all LOL

Actually the more I think about it...I mean some of us want Anthony Gonzalez in the first, we basically get the same thing, but proven for a second rounder. I'm kind of t'ed off about giving the Dolphins a first day pick I guess.

I want to hear Tomase or Reiss chime in, see if they can confirm the numbers. I don't doubt Schefter, but maybe they can provide more of a breakdown on the deal.

Nope, it's because he's a proven pro with the skills they need. Brady really needs a receiver he can go to on 2-3 steps, and Welker does just that. I realize they need downfield threats like Stallworth or Horn, and Stokely is a good possession guy over the middle, but Welker is a quick tough WR who would fill a big void for them and make the entire offense better imo.

well said this is the new nfl, everytime ive seen welker hes really impressed me , lets not complain about them spending money for years we have been complaining the havent, ya ho keep it coming

Geez, some of you guys like to whine. Even on the heels of the A.D. signing!

THIS DEAL IS DECEPTIVE! I guarantee you that there are a couple phony years on the end of deal, and perhaps a "poison pill" for the Dolphins involved as well. (Though I don't like the use of poison pills, so I hope that is not the case).

THIS GUY CAUGHT ALMOST 70 PASSES LAST YEAR, WITH JOEY HARRINGTON, DAUNTE CULPEPPER, AND CLEO FREAKING LEMON THROWING TO HIM! Imagine what he will do with Tom Brady as his quarterback!

He will be a great addition, don't worry. And those of you saying that we should've drafted somebody...they would not have contributed immediately, which is what we need, and what Welker will do.

A rare breath of sanity as the forum draftniks lament the loss of the 60th round draft pick for a player who has DEMONSTRATED in NFL games the very qualities BB has had a difficult time obtaining with several past #2 picks.

Wes Welker is neither a good punt-returner nor a good kick returner. Matter of fact Kevin Faulk was alot better at returning punts.

Oh, and to clarify. Guarantee you that this was poison pilled. Otherwise the union would have filed charges against both teams and the league. Both sides have to get together on this one to insure these pills are eliminated.

we just took two of their players, plus they traded dan wilkinson. and is harrington gone? no big loss there.

miami is rebuilding

i won't start worrying about them until they draft well

gimme a break. faulk is sure handed. as for good punt returns, i can't recall faulk busting one for a td.

I agree that he probably won't help too much in the return game. I hope they keep Hobbs returning kicks, and they can probably find somebody better for punts (though Welker is better at PR than KR).

But as a WR, he is a perfect fit for this team. Excellent route runner, tough, smart, quick burst off the line, excels at finding the soft spot in a zone...exactly what we look for at the position. He's as good a fit with the offense as A.D. is with the defense (though is not of A.D.'s caliber, of course).
