Giants Trade for LB Jon Beason

Interesting, it mentions that Beason might be vying for the middle linebacker spot held by Mark Herzlich. Is Mark not doing well?

Beason can play MLB and weak side. Though he was a multi time player at pro bowl prior to his injury a few years ago. I imagine Keith Rivers or Spencer Paysinger would be the ones losing playing time due to this.

Whoa, I didn't expect that. I've heard from some Giants fans (on Reddit) that they aren't too happy with Herzlich. It's disappointing, because he's the only guy I root for on the Giants.

What part of trading for an over-the-hill oft-injured marginal player when you are 0-4 confuses you?

To me, that is desperation on a team's part to salvage whatever they left of a season, and to try to fix arguably the worst defense in the league. The fact that it's a guy like Jon Beason and of his caliber proves that the Giants are getting desperate.

The smart thing to do would have been to make a trade like this a long time ago before your season fell into the tank.

It's desperation when you trade for the backup of the guy you released over the summer. Tht team can't draft linebackers at all...beason had microfracture surgery and was never the same.

Actually, if the guy looks to need some recovery time, getting him for a low pick for the future seems to make sense for an 0-4 team. Low stakes gamble.

Key word there is was. And that was like 4 seasons ago. He isn't injured now, otherwise he wouldn't have passed his physical.

Is he 100% healthy? Who knows at this point, but he's definitely 100% terrible. He couldn't even beat out former Giants LB Chase Blackburn, a guy the Giants themselves deemed not even worthy for a roster spot, for a starter's role.

Secondly, his current contract is pretty much screams of a one-season rental. The Giants will likely void his contract after the season with no dead cap space. There's no guarantee he'll be back next season or even healthy for that matter, thus there's no real way to factor in the future into this decision

Moreover, the Giants wouldn't have went after a player like Beason if their GM hadn't disregarded the LB position. This trade is pretty much an admission of that. If they did have a capable LB corps, there's no way they'd be trading for injury/declining skills risk such as Beason, obviously.

If I were them, I'd be looking for O-Line help too.

Unless you honestly believe the Giants plan to pay him that salary and carry his enormous cap hit, then the most logical thought would be that they plan on using him for THIS season to see what he's got left, and then if he does have something, they can renegotiate a new contract.

If he doesn't show anything this season he won't get another shot. He passed his physical, that means he healthy enough to play at least. He was a starter for the Panthers at the start of this season before getting benched for skill, not injury reasons. It's not like he's on the shelf, unable to play or contribute.

In their weak division, an 0-4 start might not be a death sentence like it would be for most teams. Dallas plays the Broncos this week, and should logically lose, so they'd be 2-3, and if the Giants win against the Eagles, they're 1-4, only 1½ games out of first place. So this trade on the surface, as I stated already, has not much to do with the future or next year, it's all about fortifying an area of need to try to make a run in a division that is still wide open even for an 0-4 team.

You need to contact the Giants and see if they can undo this horrible misstep. I was just putting out a scenario of the type of things an 0-4 team might do, I am not emotionally invested in this.
