From Pro Football Talk:

WILFORD WAS TENDERED AT SECOND-ROUND LEVEL
In response to our story regarding NFL documents indicating that the Jags tendered restricted free agent receiver Ernest Wilford at the low level, a league source tells us that Wilford was indeed tendered at the second-round level.

WILFORD RIPE FOR THE PLUCKING?
Thanks to a tip from our pal Gregg Rosenthal of Rotoworld.com, it appears that official NFL records reveal that the Jaguars have tendered receiver Ernest Wilford at the low level of $850,000.
Published reports suggested that Wilford would be tendered at the new second-round level.
This means that Wilford can be had for a multi-year offer sheet that becomes fully guaranteed if, for example, Wilford plays five football games in Jacksonville in any year of the deal.
Wilford was a fourth-round pick in 2004. Thus, if someone else signs him and the Jags opt not to match, they'll get a fourth-round pick as compensation.
As we see it, either the Jags have decided that they'd be happy to get a fourth-round pick for Wilford, or they're just stupid. If someone else wants him bad enough to give up a four, he's as good as gone.
Along these same lines, we can't figure out why the Redskins gave punter Derrick Frost the low tender. Frost was undrafted, so the 'Skins get no compensation if someone else signs him. And someone else will be able to get him via the poison pill device.
As we see it, the 'Skins would have been smarter to save the $850,000 in cap space and not tender Frost at any level. Or, if they really wanted to keep him, they should have bumped the number to $1.3 million, which would have triggered the second-round level of compensation -- and as a practical matter would have scared off any other suitors.

Instead of a second for Welker why not a second for Wilford. The guy is huge (6'4", 220), had 7 TD's two years ago and 2 TD's this past year catching passes from two mediocre QB's in a conservative offense.

I'm just not sure Wilford has the skill set that does well in our offense. I like him but it's easier to envision Welker excelling than Wilford - not to mention that Welker does more stuff on special teams.

I would take Wilford over Welker in terms of receiving.

Welker is really good recieving kickoffs and punts. But is he worth a second round pick? I'm not really feeling it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it say that it would cost a 4th round pick for Wilford? If that's the case, then I wouldn't hesitate according to his size and numbers. Does anyone know anything about his attitude, work ethic, etc. In other words, would he be a good fit as a Patriot?

I don't think the Pats are in the mood for any type of unknown/lesser known players this off season. They seem to be targeting well known quantities to ensure they don't have the Starks and Gabriel fiascos this year.

The top part is a correction to the original story and it says he was tendered at the second-round level.

I've seen him play and he's got an attitude, a good attitude. He goes out and gets the ball and isn't afraid of contact. On one play his helmet popped off because of a hard hit while diving for the end zone and he still made it in. He didn't turtle like most receivers would.

I have seen him a little bit too and I think he is someone who could devolope into a real good reciever. I posted the question prior to his tendering and most people feared he wouldnt fit in our system. I think he is worth a shot and Ild rather him than welker but it is more risky because welker seems a good fit for us. so basicly I am saying I would be happy with either.

Oh WOW he's a big receiver, and we know how well we've done over the past few years with big receivers.

Wilford had 36 catches last year. Welker had 67.

If were talking about potential then that isn't totally relevant. Reggie Williams and Matt Jones got priority over Wilford because they are first round picks but I think most Jacksonville fans would tell you Wilford was the teams most consistent receiver.
