I noticed when I re-watched the Falcons game that Harmon was playing ahead of Wilson. What is the deal with this guy? He does not even have a 2013 stat.

I went back and looked at the 2012 NFL draft and there are some really good players that went after Wilson that could have really helped this team. Wilson seems to be another BB 2nd round flop at DB.

another DB bust by BB. Pink hats fanboys to rip me in 3..2..1

BB looks like an idiot for this one.

Our next pick, Jake Bequette (3rd RD) , has shown even less than Wilson

Brilliant pick... This was the pick there not only made BB move dmc to safety, but also traded for Talib :singing:

So ending up with a posible all-pro safety and corner is worth a second round pick ;)

Wilson is a special teamer, and our #4 safety. Belichick was desperate for a safety and picked Wilson. He played quite a bit last year, but really isn't any good.

Ahhh, perspective...

Until this thread, I had kind of forgotten about Wilson.

As long as he's on the roster, I'll hold out out hope that he can get back on the field an contribute. He did show some promise as a rookie, so I don't know if he regressed in the offseason, has a poor attitude, is limited by an injury, or what.

I guess the important thing is that the defense looks pretty good right now, so if he can work his way back onto the field, good for him. If not, it probably won't make any difference.

Not gonna deny Wilson and Bequette look like terrible picks right now and likely will always be looked at that way. However, if Jones/Hightower/Dennard becomes staples as they are showing, it's still an A draft. You don't hit on every pick

Well he makes a lot of mistakes and has looked anywhere from mediocre or terrible as a safety. But, if I'm not mistaken, didn't he play a little CB at Illinois? I wonder if he could play there in a pinch?

He sucks. This thread brings back memories of the annual "reach" discussion, though, so there's that...

I think the question is whether he can play safety "in a pinch". Seriously, we would likely move McCourty over to corner rather than use Wilson at corner, where he has never played since coming to the NFL. I'm not even sure that Wilson would be better than Edelman or a street free agent.

like all GM's in the past, present and future, BB has his busts

and BBs weakness is DB, and the 2nd round

Gronkowski, Vollmer and Vereen all say hi.

Honestly, what's the point of this thread? I think we all thought Wilson wasn't a good pick at the time and it's been discussed. I think we can also all agree that no GM/team is perfect at drafting and drafting DB's has been a weak area for this team. That said, why is this worth a thread right now? We have a tough road game coming up against a good team and you choose to focus on Tavon friggin Wilson? You want to be yet another in the ranks of "New England fan who knows more than BB about how to run the team?" Is that it?

Wilson was a second round pick. At best thats a 50/50 proposition to turn into a decent player. Somehow this board expects a lock to be picked every time in spots where the success rate is 50% or less.
That said, players develop at different rates, including some who never do.
Wilson is 13 months into his NFL career, and has not yet developed into what was hoped (a safety with the cover skills needed in a pass happy NFL).
Of course all is not lost yet since Rodney Harrison didn't start a game until his 3rd year, Dashon Goldston started no games as a rookie and 2 in year 2, and John Lynch started 4,0 and 6 games in his first 3 years and went on to play in 9 probowls, just to name a few guys who weren't looking so great by the first quarter of year 2 and went on to become good players.
Of course there are many more who did little in their first year and a quarter and went on to do nothing, but only time will tell.

Belichick sucks, he can't draft, he can't coach. What? We have the best record of any teams during his tenure? How can that be if he sucks so? Well, he's taken this team to 5 Super Bowls but he didn't win them all. He must suck otherwise we would win the super bowl every year and all draft picks would be stars. Why can't he be more like Jerry Jones or Marvin Lewis? We never have any luck.

RUSM!!!!

While the board was more split than usual, there were plenty of posters who defended the pick, both at the time he was drafted and while he was sucking on the field last season.

Yeah, Wilson was a head-scratcher who looks like a lousy pick, and Bequette was a reasonable-looking choice who looks like a lousy pick.

And Jones was a risky gamble on a "raw" athlete who turned out to be much readier than we all expected and looks like a strong pick, and Hightower was a safe choice of a polished Saban product who took a little while to find his feet and looks like a strong pick.

And looking over Patriots draft history, whether a pick was considered a "reach" or a "bargain" has had no predictive power about the pick's success.

:stars2:

My two keys to surviving Patriots draft days, as a fan:

1. Look at OVERALL success rates. E.g., the Pats went into last year's draft with only 6 total picks and walked away with 3 bona fide starters. Awesome.

2. Avoid thinking of draft success as the ground state from which deviations are unexpected and unacceptable. We all KNOW it's not true, that everybody misses a ton, but yet we fall victim to the fallacy again and again. E.g., there is much, much more fuming over Wilson than there is celebration over Jones, or even Dennard.

Agreed, but that doesn't make Wilson a good pick. The team needed safety help in 2012 and 2013. Sure, we'd all be happy if Wilson became starter material in 2014.

I also agree that 2nd rounders are a 50-50 proposition. Getting a top special teamer is not a win, but also not the worst. Many players simply don't ever contribute.

When a 2nd rounder isn't good enough to be the first off the bench in his second year, he must be able to be a top special teamer or play more than one position. Wilson certainly fits that bill. As a top special teamer, he will have at least through next pre-season to prove himself.

Before free agency, a team could spend th time to develop players. It is harder now, especially with 4-year contracts. Using a 2nd rounder for 3rd year production is better than nothing, but not a success.

Finally, I think that Wilson did contribute last year. He was very useful in the beginning of the season.

Just pretend Wilson was drafted in the seventh round and Dennard in the second.

He was benched because he blows, yes, but it's also that Harmon outplayed him (not hard). So, that's a good problem to have. You could do worse for a #4 safety.
