Pats sign Sammy Morris

Re: RUMOR: Pats sign Sammy Morris??

As a short yardage/goalline back, Evans isn't a pile driver, and if there is a hole somewhere else he doesn't have the quickness to change direction and hit it. He's strictly a straight ahead runner, and doesn't have the power to push ahead like a guy like Bettis did (giving the most obvious example). His strength is in his versatility. I like Evans alot, but a guy who's a running back and can be a threat in multiple ways is much better as a short yardage back than Evans. That said, Sammy Morris is going to be in a battle to make this team if the Patriots bring in a RB in the draft.

LeKevin Smith could get 3rd and 2 for Chrissakes.

My sleeper fullback is Vince Wilfork... the fridge part III.

Re: RUMOR: Pats sign Sammy Morris??

We don't need a short yardage back - Maroney is fine there. We need a guy who can run, block and catch to spell Maroney for little stretches of games and Morris can do that fine.

I would have to agree that it's mainly because of his versatility and his special teams play. He's got good size at 6' 218 and has averaged just under 4 yards per carry for his career. He's also a pretty good receiver- he caught 21 balls last year in 12 games for the Dolphins averaging 7.7 yards.

He has not proven that.........yet.

How bout Bush from Louisville. His stock is going to drop based on the injury?

thoughts?

He'll still likely be a first/early second round pick. If he falls all the way to 60, I'd pull the trigger. He's a beast with a lot of talent.

Morris agrees

The Patriots have reached an undisclosed contract agreement with free agent running back Sammy Morris, according to a league source.

The news was reported earlier today by the website scout.com.

Morris enters his eighth season in 2007. He initially drew interest from the Patriots in 2004, when he was a free agent after four seasons with the Bills (2000-2003). He played the last three years in Miami (2004-2006).

Morris joins a backfield that includes Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans. His versatility as a runner, pass-catcher and special teams player fits well in that mix.

Yeah, its a good signing. He's really versatile and will help the offense in many ways. I was hoping the Pats were going to sign him the last time he was a free agent.

Maroney, Morris, Faulk and Evans are our RB. I doubt we'll see another unless there's an injury.

That doesn't matter.

He's the guy next year.

He's going to be put in that position next year. Whether he succeeds or not we can not know, but I think he will.

Re: RUMOR: Pats sign Sammy Morris??

Are you kidding me?

If we got 3rd and 2s we'd be sizing a 4th ring right now.

How many times did Maroney get stopped vs Indy?

How many times did the Colts have 8 in the box and were expecting the INSIDE run?

A player with hurt ribs isn't going to be the same inside runner as he was previously. They weren't using Maroney's strengths to their advantage.

Also, by that time, Maroney, Dillon and Faulk were all hurt.

I do agree, though, that Evans really isn't a short-yardage back.

Re: RUMOR: Pats sign Sammy Morris??

He's like Patrick Pass except faster and doesn't fumble as much and catches the ball better. So, not really like Patrick Pass at all. More like a bigger Kevin Faulk, but not as quick or shifty.

I wouldn't characterize Pass as a fumbler...that said, his fumble when he pulled up lame was the funniest fumble I've ever seen.

Maroney, Morris, Faulk and Evans are our RB. I doubt we'll see another unless there's an injury.

I can assure you that we WILL see another. The Pats learned last year that even with 4 "RB"s you don't have enough. Mills could be the 5th if they continue the FB/H-back development.

Bottom line is that Super Bowl champions convert 3rd and 2s and 3rd and 4s. We had depth issues at RB last year and talent in the WR core that was derth in making the "big" play. Morris is a solid #2 or #3 back. Nothing against him. My personal preface is someone back there that can pound away at a defense. Maroney has shown flashes of that. He has also showed flashes of dancing behind the line- hurt or not, it is a concern of mine.

Sounds like a good signing to me....Man this is going to be a good year(s) coming up......:rocker:

Tell me about it. Before the AFC chamionship game I was fantasizing that the Pats would be in the Superbowl against Chicago and the BB would put Vince in at RB in goal line situation. That truly would exorcise the demons from 1985.

Scout.com reports that RB Sammy Morris got a four-year deal worth $7 million and that he'll get $5 million in the first two years of deal.

I don't really see Sammy Morris as the kind of running back that the Patriots need with the loss of Dillon.

I hope it works out though. I'd like to see another adequate RB signing.
