Reiss Blog: Patriots to meet with WR Wes Welker

Pats eye Welker
Continuing with their aggressive approach in free agency that already landed linebacker Adalius Thomas and tight end Kyle Brady, the Patriots are now expected to court restricted free agent receiver Wes Welker.

Welker enters his fourth season in 2007, having played his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He was tendered a one-year, $1.3 million contract by Miami.

If the Patriots sign him to an offer sheet, and the Dolphins elect not to match it, the team would have to surrender a second-round draft choice.

Welker totaled a career-high 67 catches for 687 yards last season. He had nine catches for 77 yards against the Patriots on Oct. 8.

Wow would they really consider giving up a second round pick for Welker?
Is he worth that much?

Wes Walker?

Seems they are interested in Welker.

Re: Wes Walker?

I like Welker but am not thrilled at the price of a #2 pick.

I'm not going to second guess anything BB or Pioli do, but I don't know if he's worth a 2nd rounder. (Is that second guessing?)

So the pats give the Phins a second round draft pick. They then look at the draft landscape, knowing that they have filled two immediate needs and if the right player(s) aren't there in round 1, they parlay one of the 1st round picks into the second round and future picks. I like it.

Lol.

Three threads about Welker.

To give up a second is huge, especially with the strength of this draft. This may be an indication that they are more than likely going to trade out of the #28 spot to get a second that they will have to give up in order to get Welker.

He's a great #2 receiver with sure hands and speed, and a top notch return man and special teamer, as well as being a great character guy. He'd immediately upgrade the return game (and with Maroney going to full time RB status this year, that was necessary) and the passing game. I think he's better than anything the Patriots could get in the 2nd round like a Robert Meacham, and he's far more NFL-ready, and young (he's what, 25, 26?) to boot.

Welker is a nice player but I don't think he is worth a 2nd, especially with the good players who are likely to be available there in this draft.

Re: Reiss Blog: Patriots to meet with WR Wes Welker

I'd give a 2nd for the Wanker. BB is attracted to him, not because he's an attractive young boy but because he's versitile. And signing him hurts a division rival.

Name the last Patriots round 2 draft pick who wasn't a bust.
Dillon, and we traded for him.
I'd consider taking a guy whose proven he can play, is multi-role versitile and hurts your competitor.

Re: Wes Walker?

Yep, bad typo. I modified it correctly but can't in the title.

I love Welker's intensity for the game, and his return ability, don't know if he'd be the type of "RECEIVER" I'd want. Maybe a good 4th receiver/slot type guy, but I'm not sure. I rather go after Stallworth, or even Kelley Washington (probably cheaper than Welker). Welker is a Patriot type though, does many things.

Welker, felt her, whoever smelt her dealt it.

ok just making this one cuz 8 welker threads popped up at once

I hope we get him too.
