Thompkins on all 22 film revisited: much improvement

As you may recall, I recently posted on KT's targets after all the criticism the rookies were receiving.

I had a look at the atlanta game to see how KT has been progressing. Although he only reeled in 6 of 11 targets, the results were outstanding.

After all the confusion and miscommunication between Brady and KT, they were on the same page throughout the atlanta game. Part of it, I suspect is the additional reps in practice. The other element was the amount of time Brady had in the pocket. Kudos to the offensive line.

First quarter 6:28. Dig route on the outside. incomplete.

Back shoulder throw by Brady. Timing was slightly off between the two of them, resulting in an incomplete pass. These timing plays will come with repetition.

second quarter 6:19 pass complete for 7 yards.

One thing that I noticed in this game was the recognition and adjustment of route depending on whether it was man coverage or zone. Big improvement in that recognition. KT sits comfortably on the route and Brady completes the pass

second quarter 5:01 pass complete for 49 yards

KT is open all day whenever it's man coverage. This was the great catch he made in traffic. Had Brady led him, it would have been a TD.

second quarter 3:32 incomplete.

Nice out by KT. Brady overthrows with an Atlanta player at his feet.

third quarter 9:59 complete for 18 yards

A nice in from the outside. Great separation and brady hits him in stride.

third quarter 7:17 incomplete.

This was the play that fell incomplete in the endzone. Gruden talked about the hesitation by Brady, not knowing exactly what the WR is seeing. But it looked from the film like an overthrow. The coverage was tight and I think brady was putting it where only KT could make a play on it.

third quarter 5:41 incomplete.

KT runs a circle route. He is Brady's last look on his progression. Brady drills it in, a bit behind KT and its broken up. The velocity was unnecessary as there was no other atl player on the out.

fourth quarter 15:00 complete for 26 yards.

Deep in from KT. Great catch with a headhunting CB coming across.

fourth quarter 10:34 incomplete.

Simple in from KT and a drop. Only real drop of the day.

Simple slant. Look at that great separation off the line.



So that it from the Atlanta game. A huge progression from the previous game. There is alot to get excited about. There was no miscommunication between the two on the routes. Some of the timing is still not 100% there, but it will be!

Thanks for the write up.

Basically showing in Pics what we have been talking about. Thompkins has the tools to get separation in the NFL. the thing that will take time is the communication and timing between him and Brady.

He also needs to work on his concentration during the catch as there were i think 4 balls that i saw him bobble the catch or drop.

I really don't think we could ask much more of the kid right now. Hopefully those easy drops reduce and he starts to develop greater chemistry with Brady as the season progresses.

BTW have a look at Dobson and Boyce in those pictures as well and you will see them getting separation also.

Brings a tear to my eye this thread...reminiscent of times long ago when we actually discussed silly boring things like x's and o's, game plans and strategy....much better now though as we discuss awesome things like size of Gisele's ring, Tebow's muscles and how much BB sucks as a GM and how stupid they were for not bringing in WR's because they knew or should have known the whole time that AHern was a regular Ted Bundy....ooh and my favorite how much we miss Welker.

One aspect of the having the rookie receiver corps that I haven't seen discussed much is how it will help Brady over the next three/four years or so. Instead of bringing in older WRs who may only stay a year or two, or keeping Wes around and having Brady rely on him too much, Brady has been forced to get in sync with three young guys. The process has been tough this year so far, but as Brady's skills drop a bit as he ages in the next three/four years, he will have a still-young set of receivers with whom he should have great rapport. If KT, Dobson and Boyce are in sync with Brady and are still getting good separation, they will be a formidable problem for defenses.

Maybe BB knew exactly what he was doing with the three rooks? Or did the Pats just get lucky with these three?

It'd be pretty cool if KT became the first undrafted OROY. You figure even with Gronk/Amendola back he would still get the looks to make it possible.

I like Dobson over thompkins for some reason. These 3 can be really great receivers. But I also liked the fact thompkins never left dobson's side. These 3 rookies in thompkins, Boyce and Dobson are special IMO already. They are making great strides.

i also thought of that

people on here have been wanting a reciever that "can just go up and get it" for Brady for many years, and in all honesty Brady never had that type of guy...now in KT, and maybe even more so in Dobson, he just might

which coincides great w/ the fact that he's getting to that age, and since he is human, his skills logically will begin to decline...and so he wont have to pinpoint throws, and he can throw in the vicinity and let the wr's get them

can you imagine if dobson, KT, boyce, amendola and Gronk are all on same page by years end? (and to a lesser extend edelman)

it would mean brady has his core for the next 4 years (which may be around the time he leaves football)

*as a side note, the only upgrades he would need is another TE, so we can run a deadly 3WR offense or a 2TE offense at will (we would have both slot and outside receivers)

No doubt the kid is a special athlete. As the game slows down for him, I expect the little "glitch" he has securing the ball (at least twice he has performed the tip drill with himself) to fade away (jugs gun jugs gun jugs gun)....and I expect his YAC to dramatically increase once securing the balls becomes second nature for him and he can start to think about making moves with the ball.
I keep trying to find an NFL WR with a similar body type and I just can't make a match yet. I see a little Dantae Stallworth in his frame but Thompkins has much more agility. It is just a unique body type that defy's the narrow hip speedster like Stinko....or the thicker strength WRs like Andre Johnson/Bolden types. I keep thinking beyond the NFL to find a comparable athlete....and call me crazy...but I see a similar build in Lebron James. A wide stride, almost hockey player-like bowed leg build that allows agility through strength. Broad shoulders with natural strength. Maybe I am entering the forbidden fan boy zone that I detest more than anything, but I am dreaming out loud here because I think the Pats have found a unique athlete here and we may get the chance to witness a transformation from raw to special....
And.....If the Pats could ever field a healthy lineup of Gronk/DA/Thompkins/Vereen....that is a unique arsenal that will present match up problems because D coordinators will be in a quandary how to deploy the LBs. Hope we get to see this grouping soon.

I have said in other threads that the loss of all of Brady's targets from last year (most of the threads were Welker related) that the lack of binkies for Brady may ultimately be a good thing for this offense in a lot of ways. I think the progression of Thompkins is one of them. It is hard to think that Thompkins would be where he is right now if Welker, Amendola, Gronk, or Hernandez were on the field. Brady would have probably thrown to them much more. the lack of proven receivers on this offense has probably made Thompkins progress more in four weeks than he would have in an entire season with Welker or a healthy Gronk or Amendola.

I think by the time the Pats are at full strength (returns of Amendola, Gronk, and Vereen), this offense could be very dangerous. Thompkins (and Dobson) bring things to the table that this team hasn't had in a long time.
