Should we sign a FA WR next?

Nope, while experienced, he hasn't been able to stay healthy the last two years. Myself, I wouldn't mind signing Drew Bennett, maybe even if the money is right, Stallworth from Philly.

We would have to give up a 3rd for him but we will be picking up some extra compensatory picks.

From Scouts: He is a good athlete who shows solid quickness. He is tough and will go inside to catch the ball in traffic. He will give up his body to make a play on the ball. He can play outside or in the slot with three-receiver sets. He shows solid quickness getting in and out of his routes and good build-up speed when tracking the deep ball. He is a smart receiver with a good feel for finding the holes in zone coverage. He shows the ability to make plays after the catch. He can make people miss and shows a burst with the ball in his hands. He also had good awareness and is adept at getting both feet down on the sidelines. He shows the ability to separate on intermediate crossing routes. He is more quick than fast, and does not have great height or size for the position.

Seems like he would fit in well with our offense.

Stallworth would be my hope. He might demand more money than is reasonable though. Horn doesn't really fit the mold, though that isn't always a bad thing. He is a bit too much of a "look at me" type for my liking. He doesn't create seperation well enough. And he has injury issues. Not too many touchdowns of late either.

There is also a good bit of talent in the draft at WR. If the right FA option comes along, sure lets get him, but we aren't desperate at this point.

The more threats the more we can do to create mismatches. Maybe we can swing a trade with the Rams for a 5th if a 3rd is too high. I like this kid.

Why give up a third round draft pick for an unrestricted free agent?

The Pats should be agressive in finding a deep threat WR (17 ypc +), but can take their time in looking for more basic veteran depth (10 -13 yards per catch)

Occasionally the draft can provide immediate help at WR but one is best not expecting meaningful contributions from rookie WR for quite some time.

So yes, a deep threat WR should be a priority now.

So yes, a deep threat WR should be a priority now.

Hopefully this management team learned a lesson last season - to not rely on a rookie WR to produce his first season - and they'll grab themselves a true #1 WR who can get deep and command double teams. Randy Moss would be my hope.

Before free agency started, I wanted Drew Bennett, Kevin Curtis, or Donte Stallworth, in that order. Curtis appears out of reach with all the attention he has garnered. Word is that Bennett is likely to sign with the Rams for a good deal of money, so he may be out as well. But I haven't heard much of anything about Stallworth today, so perhaps he is the best bet at this point? I bet he wants too much money, but if he doesn't get any bites, his demands could come down, and thats when the Pats can swoop in! :rocker:

Alternatively, Justin Gage from Chicago might be worth a look. He's been dissapointing thus far, but he's had some pretty craptastic QBs to deal with there. Maybe a change of scenery would allow him to live up to his considerable expectations?

And DJ Hackett from Seattle is another possibility. I like him a lot, think he would be great here. However, he is a restricted free agent. The question is whether he is worth a second round pick, which the Pats would have to give up to Seattle in order to sign Hackett. Thoughts, anyone?

I'd do Moss for a 4th and a conditional incentive for a 3rd rounder. If not I'd like to see Stallworth in a Patriots uniform.
