Hell, I'd re-name 'em the Skins and make a half a potato covered w/cheese and bacon the logo.

It's not about political correctness, it's about what's right. Anything is better than a dehumanizing racial slur.

I suppose they can rename them the Washington political whores but I doubt that'll go over well. I thought the Virginia Generals would make an awesome team, I have a color scheme all picked out based on Robert E. Lee's uniform.

The Patriot one looks really good. I would try to get rid of the tail on the bottom left. Makes him look like a ghost or something. We'd go from the flying Elvis to Pat Patriot the friendly minuteman.

I like it too (and agree with losing the "tail"). But the problem with this design as well as with the old Pat Patriot helmet logo is that from a short distance it would be indistinguishable. From the stands, Pat Patriot looks like a static tripod. Flying Elvis at least evokes forward motion.

First off, George Washington was a general from Virginia.

Next, I don't see how a uniform based on Grey/blue, crimson, and gold will inspire people to wave the Confederate flag.

Finally, there was nothing benevolent by Lincoln concerning that war. If you want to start a thread in the political section about the subject I'd be happy to debate you but he was a tyrant who wiped his behind with the Constitution, his type did much to cause the war in the first place.

I don't have the time this morning, but sir, I'd ask you, as a fan of the New England Patriots, learn the true history of the original Boston Patriots. John Adams, Sam Adams, Paul Revere...not exactly coattail riders.

I won't take the bait - you can probably tell what my response would be. And Snake, you know there are threads on a couple of different history websites that have been arguing back and forth on this subject for years! I say, its a nice day, it's football season, let's argue about our rookie WRs instead

(That said, I have to say that RE Lee did inspire one of my alltime favorite quotes...when a solider was asked by Lee after Antietam (I think) what he thought about "those people" (the Union Army) over there, the soldier responded, "We will fight them 'til Hell freezes over, sir, and then we'll fight them on the ice!"

I saw this on Deadspin a few days ago, and immediately thought the Pats were one of the best of the bunch along with the Titans.

The Cowboys, Giants, Vikings and Seahawks logos look terrible, in my opinion.

I agree. after looking at them all, I thought that only New England and Tennessee were improvements. Pittsburgh, Giants and Green Bay were laughable.

have no problem with the name. As an Irish American, should I demand that ND changes its logo? Does it portray the Irish as a bunch of hooligans? Maybe. Who cares?

The name was given to the team by their owner to 'honor' a guy thought to be Native American who turned out to be a white poser. He was also the last owner to integrate his team. Clearly, a man whose example we should continue to emulate.

The poll that is often quoted about the number of Native Americans who have a problem with the name was methodologically flawed (it asked, I believe, "As a self-identified Native American, do you find the Redskins name offensive or does it not bother you?" -- the two answers are not symmetrical, you can find something offensive and not be bothered by it personally). Even if we ignore the methodological problems, the fact that 20% of Native Americans were personally offended by the name should be enough.

The difference between the Irish and Native American experience in the United States is so completely and utterly different that it renders your analogy terrible and laughable. That, and the Fighting Irish nickname has never been used to reduce a person's identity to their skin color.

And again, it's a racial slur. That should be enough, but for some reason it isn't.

Well, you can add me to your blocked list, because I fully support the Redskin's name and usage. That whole "genocide" bit has been disproved solidly, but the likes of Churchill (a proven fraud and plagiarist who lost his professorship over his books about the genocide of American Indians) still haunt our society and universities, pushing their failed policies as fact and poisoning our youth with their PC toxins..

The strawman that the PC crowd uses is typical of leftist propaganda/political actions, however. What they do is to try and fit modern mores onto someone/something from the past and declare that "it" was terrible and we should all feel some sort of guilt about it.

Judging a person or class or whatever outside of it's own environment is disingenuous at best, a distortion of reality. Individuals and even national actions MUST be judged within the mores and philosophies of their time, and NOT by modern mores or philosophies. To do otherwise is more dangerous, and results in the sort of crapweasel tactics as demanding reparations for the descendants of slaves, the castigation of American white males as a "privileged" class who should be shamed with "white guilt" and other such unwarranted ideas.

Besides which, the entire idea of "racism" is inherently flawed, a product of leftist propaganda. There is only one race: Human. Everything else is an artificial construct designed by the left to pit one group against another in a bid to gain power over the resulting factions and defeat them one by one. The only good thing that has come out of the past 50 years of this is that the American citizens are beginning to understand the insidious nature of the Diversity Industry and their Zampolits and rejecting them outright.

Those arguing against the use of the name "Redskins" deserve their comeuppance, and I hope that they and their entire PC/Diversity Industry are relegated to the dustbin of history, a fate more generous than that which they deserve.
