We all know he is on a one year prove it deal. But at what point do you say talib is our guy. He fits the system perfectly. And the closer to free agency he gets obviously the higher his pricetag gets.

I'm thinking if he still looks solid by week 6 maybe we should talk about extending him to an incentive laden deal similar to Amendola. My worry would be games missed for suspension or injury.

100% he wouldn't sign long term right now. He is going to play..try and have a big year and cash in huge. He won't be a patriot next year if he has a pro bowl year i can tell you that.

Talib's contract was all about betting on himself for a bigger contract next offseason. I highly doubt he'd be open to negotiations before then, as he'll probably want to test the waters first to see how much he can get.

I doubt we see any movement by either side until then. If he has an excellent season, like we all expect him to, he could price himself out of the Patriots' price range.

If they can't agree a long term deal then there's the Franchise Tag.

Talib's injury and character risks makes me nervous signing him long term. But he's a pretty good player so I'd hate to lose him. A good cornerback is like finding the holy grail these days.

Not really. Finding a Revis is like finding a holy grail.

There are tons of good/very good CBs out there...the pats just haven't had one since ty law/Samuel even

The Patriots have the potential to have 3 very good cornerbacks - Talib, Dennard and Arrington in the slot. That's a better starting point than most teams.

I'm sure glad you have nothing to do with the contract decisions this team makes.

No thanks!

From my perspective, I am not willing to further compromise the integrity of the New England Patriots offense not for Aqib Talib nor Brandon Spikes nor Adrian Wilson especially with the following unrestricted free agents for the 2014 calendar year:

Wendell, Ryan
Svitek, Will
Green, Tyronne (currently on injured reserve)
Blount, LeGarrette
Washington, Leon
Hoomanawanui, Michael
Edelman, Julian

If anything, the New England Patriots need to allocate even more salary cap dollars in the future on an upgrade to the following backup tight ends that have been under contract recently by the New England Patriots:

Ballard
Fells
Hoomanawanui
Mulligan
Shiancoe
Winslow Jr.

Finally, the following second round and third round draft picks need to start making a major contribution next year to the New England Patriots defense:

Wilson, Tavon
Bequette, Jake
Collins, Jamie
Ryan, Logan
Harmon, Duron

Between the 2012 and 2013 NFL Drafts, eleven picks have been allocated to the defense while only three to the offense.

If he has a probowl year and say gets 9 or 10 INTs..do you see the pats realistically spending 10 mill a year on the guy for say 4-5 years..becasue that's what he will be looking for

What he's looking for is irrelevant. The only thing the matters is what the market sets his price as. Last year CBs of a similar skill level (Smith, Grimes, DRC) only got around 5.5 mil a year.

Maybe I'm still feeling a bit burned by the Hernandez contract, but just because Talib seems to have turned it all around here doesn't mean that character issues wouldn't resurface once he got his long-term deal and big signing bonus. I'm sure they'll proceed cautiously with him, but a long-term commitment would worry me.

NONE of those players have as big an impact on the Pats chances of success as Talib does. I'd rather pay fair market value for one impact player than use the cap space to try to retain a handful of mediocre ones. Did you watch the Tampa Bay game?

I think that Talib will wait till the season is over to talk contract. But he looks like he will be a key player for this defense going forward. As far as your concern about tight ends, Gronk will be back in a few weeks, and developmental tight ends can be found in later rounds of the draft. [For example both Aaron Hernandez and Owen Daniels were taken in the 4th round of the draft.]

It's hard to predict the future free agent market, but the real dilemma is that even if there are 'comparably talented' free agent corners on the market next year, NONE of them is proven to excel in our system outside of Talib. He's a #1 CB for us, in OUR defensive system. I'm not saying he's irreplaceable but he is proven commodity. I am hoping we can retain him on a fair multi-year contract that has some safeguards built-in against injuries and suspension.

Aqib Talib already turned down a five year contract offer from the New England Patriots this past off-season as well as contract offers from two other teams.

In addition, the following New England Patriots will be unrestricted free agents after the 2014 NFL Season:

Vereen
Ridley
Solder
Cannon
Connolly
Wilfork
Kelly
Gregory
McCourty
Slater
Gostkowski
Aiken

With the three year contract extension signed by Rob Ninkovich, there are only so many slots for high dollar contracts in the salary cap era.

:yeahthat: By all accounts Talib chose to gamble on the one-year deal, knowing that he's a good fit here and that IF he stays healthy he should put together a season that earns him a big-money deal somewhere.

That said, the Patriots aren't the only team contemplating the lessons of Aaron Hernandez. This is a bad time for a FA with a rap sheet to look for a long contract with lots of guaranteed $$.

There is no doubt that Talib will receive a large contract offer from the Patriots, and probably several such, just as he has in the past.

Maybe he'll actually sign one of them, maybe he won't.

This. He's been a beast this year, but it's hard to win in free agency.

I guess we will see what he's market is next year if its like 7 million per im sure the pats will re-sign him but if it's in the 9 or 10 per range I think the pats let him walk... right now he's leading the NFL in INT's and playing great so I would say he is worth re-signing but its all about at what price

I'll leave his personal past aside. First, it's not fair- by any stretch- to compare with Hernandez. Belichick will handle each player as a case-by-case basis, which I think is the right thing to do.

As far as re-signing him, I'm sure it won't be easy, but man I'm happy with him this season. Last season I didn't think he was all that great- like many pointed out, it was more so that his presence allowed McCourty to move to safety that really improved the secondary- but now I think he's legitimately pretty good. Let's see how he looks against Julio Jones.

I hope we sign him just for the sake of not wasting high draft picks on guys trying to replace him.

Besides, we'll have the money after mankins and wilfork restructure or we low ball them once they get a little older.
