Cut the crap, guys. We need this guy more than Borat needed Pamela Anderson.

I can see us moving up to get him. Big body, high motor, good football IQ. NFL GM's are not going to let this guy slip out of the middle of the first round.

Are you with me? And I hate Notre Dame. But I love this kid. One of the few players who more than held his own against Bama in the nat'l championship last year.

Perhaps I'm mistaken (I turned that game off early in the third when it was getting out of hand), but wasn't 'Bama running RIGHT AT HIM, and having a lot of success doing so?

How much help does he have on that line?

In theory, a lot. Stephon Tuitt is considered a future 1st rounder. Prince Shembo is a consensus draftable talent at OLB, and Kapron Lewis-Moore is now in the NFL.

That said, I wouldn't trade up Nix. Best case scenario you get a top nose tackle, which with the way the game is played nowadays, is a little like a great defensive first baseman.

Do you think Ra'shede Hageman would be better and more versatile?

I mean, I'm the biggest Ra'Shede Hageman advocate out there. I think he's Big Sey redux. He can absolutely play any position on the defensive line. But not just play them, play them well. I remember watching him beat the OT around the edge at RE in a 40 front. He's amazing... the explosion off the snap and the upper body strength is true blue-chip stuff.

That said (and I hope I'm dead wrong on this), the sooner we get our hopes up for that kid the better, because the mind says he's a top 15 lock. And while a lot of people are jumping off the ledge, we aren't nearly that bad.

I really like Nix as a player. I think that the Pats' only hope is that the rest of the NFL decides that he's a two down player and not worth taking high. I think he'd be the perfect replacement for Wilfork, but I don't expect him to be within easy trade-up range and I don't expect the Pats to make a big trade for him.

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it. Nix, in theory, was surrounded by talent, but he was the only guy in that front to play well in that game. Tuitt, as you mention, is much more physically talented than Nix, but he was absolutely dreadful in that one game.

I mean, I like Nix. I don't know if I'd trade up for him though. He did get man handled in the Bama game, no question about it. And he hasn't been insanely impressive to me this year either and I've watched every ND game. He's good vs the run, but kind of non existent as a pass rusher. IMO.

Forget that one game. I haven't seen much out of Tuitt in any game. He looks nice in shorts I'm sure, but what is his position in the NFL?

Just wait and grab a guy like Daniel McCullers. Big time body to have to move. Nix will probably be out of our range.

The New England Patriots need an interior pass rush from the defensive tackle position. Tommy Kelly will be 33 years old next season and on the last year of his two year contract. Tommy Kelly is not the long term solution at the defensive tackle position.

Ra'Shede Hageman could potentially resolve the interior pass rush from the defensive tackle position for the long term.

If you want a 3-Tech type, then you draft Will Sutton from ASU, tell him to bin the extra weight his coaches have asked him to put on this year (inexplicably) and then plug him in. You've got Geno Atkins MK2.

Really not a fan of Nix. 'Bama ran right at him in the Title Game at the start of the year and he's been hit and miss so far this year. In the game that mattered against Michigan, he was manhandled by the Michigan interior OL.

I love both Nix and Hageman. Nix is the most dominant NT I have seen in college football since I started following the draft (which is only 6 years), and while ND may have been dominated by Alabama, none of it was his fault. I actually thought he had a very good game and Alabama did a good job of running plays away from him. I also don't think its fair to view him as just a run stuffer. He may not be a pure pass rusher but he has violent hands, gets off the line quickly with good penetration and can really push the pocket. He may not put up great individual stats but he will be a fantastic facilitator for those around him. What's one of the best ways to get your edge rushers more sacks? Don't give opposition QB's a pocket to step up into, and that is exactly what Nix does. Even against teams like Alabama and Stanford with top quality O-lines, Nix consistently knocked his opponent back off the line on initial contact and created pressure up the middle. Call me crazy but right now I would take Nix over Clowney for the Pats. Clowney has the insane athleticism and upside, but I think Nix is more proven, plays a position of greater need for this team and is just a flat out better football player right now.

On Hageman, I put him in my first mock draft and I don't plan on taking him out any time soon. He is much more raw than Nix but his athleticism and upside is crazy and he has the potential to be a top 5 pick. He is the most versatile and explosive DT in this draft and right now I have him ranked only behind Nix, although that can change if he continues to prove himself.

I think both of these guys could be special and I would be willing to give up the entire draft and Mallett just to get these two. I'm not usually a fan of trading future picks but I would be willing to give up one of next years picks (probably a 2nd, I wouldn't want to give up a 1st) to move up and grab both if available. If we could somehow come out of the draft with Nix, Hageman and my other binky Trey Millard I don't think I could ask for a better draft.

Now the likelihood of either guy being available for the Pats is pretty slim right now, although we really are only getting into the early stages of draft evaluation. The one thing that does give me hope is that I think DT in the draft is becoming an area of market inefficiency. With the demand for pass rushers increasing in a pass happy NFL, I think the DT position is becoming undervalued in the draft and good position of value. DT's are falling, especially run stuffers like Nix, so there is still a chance he could be on the board in the mid/late 1st. Just look at Jonathan Hankins who was seen as a top 10 pick this time last year. Sharrif Floyd and Star Lotulelei were suppose to be top 5 picks, John Jenkins went in the 3rd round, Brockers and Cox went a bit lower than expected in 2012, and you have to go back to 2010 to find the last pure DT to go in the top 10. I really think DT is a position that is becoming overlooked and that may put Nix and/or Hageman in a spot the Pats could move to get them.

Hageman AND Millard? You have impeccable taste, my friend:rocker:

If Nix can take away a pocket he'd be a wonderful fit. I am not convinced of that yet.

Forget it, BB will take a DB ;)

Te'o was on that team also.
Nix is a moose and in no way as athletic as Ngata (just a comp for size wise). Pass on trading up for him. You can't move him too much but he doesn't move much either (minor exaggeration).

I love both Nix and Hageman.

In my mind Nix is the best DT in this draft. That being said, he is long off the board before we pick.

Hageman is a beast and the absolute best fit for our defense. Unfortunately he is exploding up draft boards and will probably be off the board right after Nix.

Sutton is not a BB type player. Barely six foot and when he gets tired plays upright.

McCullers is a huge and takes up a ton of space, but does little if anything else.

Coleman of Cal is starting to slide down draft boards. But I could see BB being interested in him.

Jennigans of FSU is appealing as a third down pass rushers, but not enough sand in the pants for first or second down.

Anthony Johnson of LSU is a pure one gapper. Same for Easley of Florida.

Louis Nix mans the middle

Nix will be gone very early, too early for us, according to ESPN's McShay and Big Hair.

But I giggle at the thought of him coming over to eat with Vince. I can imagine Vince's wife not liking how much food is being consumed.

I agree wholeheartedly about our need, which I'm still peeved at our not taking UConn's DT two years ago, instead taking STer Tavon Wilson in the second round.

I didn't know anything about Hageman, but his size and athleticism appears to be elite Ra'Shede Hageman 2012 Football Highlights - YouTube

Have to nix Nix. Too immobile. Oklahoma ran all over them today.
